Walmart’s ambitious announcement to achieve zero-carbon operations by 2040 signals it is looking to electrify its truck fleet as the next step in the company’s green evolution.
Walmart laid out a three-fold plan to completely cut the company’s emissions, which included electrifying all of its vehicles, including long-haul trucks, by 2040. It also plans to use wind, solar and other renewable energy sources to 100% power its facilities by 2035, and transition to low-impact refrigerants for cooling and electrifying its heating equipment for its stores, clubs, and data and distribution centers by 2040.
“We want to play an important role in transforming the world’s supply chains to be regenerative. We face a growing crisis of climate change and nature loss and we all need to take action with urgency,” said Doug McMillon, Walmart president and CEO. “The commitments we’re making today not only aim to decarbonize Walmart’s global operations, they also put us on the path to becoming a regenerative company–one that works to restore, renew and replenish in addition to preserving our planet, and encourages others to do the same.”
The announcement precedes Walmart’s annual Sustainability Milestone Summit, which will be held virtually on Tuesday, Sept. 22, during Climate Week’s HubLive.
