It is widely known that connected vehicle technologies can tackle inefficiencies and lost productivity within HGV, LCV and car fleets. The same technology can also be applied to plant and machinery and whether fitted by an OEM or retrofitted by an end user, the technology can have significant benefits. We look at the features of asset tracking and how businesses that own plant and machinery can make the technology worth their while.
1) Locating your assets
As its name suggests, asset tracking allows you to pinpoint the whereabouts of your plant equipment in real-time. Collections, deliveries and pre-delivery inspections all become simplified with the ability to view your entire fleet on a live map and the power to easily identify each type of asset through simple icons.
2) Preventing theft
Theft and misuse of plant equipment causes heavy financial losses. Asset tracking from Trakm8 provides plant managers with a complete overview of plant equipment locations. What’s more, the system allows you to apply virtual barriers around specific sites and set up email alerts to inform you of suspicious activity such as equipment being used out of hours or outside of your predefined geo-fenced area. With some machines, you are even able to immobilise your equipment via your web portal or mobile app.
3) Detecting out-of-hours and un-permitted usage
As well as being alerted to potential theft, email alerts can also be scheduled to notify you of usage reports to ensure machinery or plant that is out on hire is being used in line with agreed CPA terms and conditions. Usage reports enable you to track usage hours and if a machine is breaching the terms of hire agreements between you and an end user. You are then able to contact the customer or immobilise the asset remotely.
4) Identifying faults and scheduling maintenance work
By having access to the CANbus, our asset tracking solutions can provide users with a diagnostic overview of machinery. By identifying faults with plant, power generation systems or machinery in advance, you are able to schedule a service engineer before assets break down.
The servicing of plant and machinery becomes entirely automated with end-users able to upload and update service records to understand which engineer completes the work, what work is undertaken and how long it took to complete. Engineers can use these logs to proactively service machines when passing, rather than making dedicated trips.
Further information can also be added to the system and alert you when requirements such as LOLER testing, Tax and or MOTs are due to be conducted.
In addition to assisting with the logistics of your fleet, the Trakm8 Asset system allows you to log service hours and receive reminders when assets require a service or experience a service breach. By using a simple Gantt chart report, having the ability to view service requirements enables your business to proactively order service parts or book in a machine with a dealer.
