Thieves seem to have set their sights on charging stations and their valuable cables. A British company has just developed the perfect solution.
Although it is not common, it may have happened to you at some point. In Spain, approaching a public charging station can, in some cases, be an experience fraught with doubts and uncertainties. It is estimated that one in four stations in Spain is inoperative due to poor maintenance or a specific problem. One of these problems may be the tampering and/or theft of charging cables. This setback may now be coming to an end thanks to technology recently unveiled by a British company. It is called the CableGuard system.
Hundreds of meters of cables loaded with precious copper are hidden inside each charging station. The golden metal sells for a good price on illegal or secondary markets. The reward is worth it for those willing to risk being caught. The problem is that many public charging stations are poorly monitored or located in overly discreet spaces where thieves can operate with ease and impunity. Companies have sought solutions to prevent damage.

Forensic protection system for easy identification of thefts
However, until now, no one had come up with a practical and economically viable solution. While there are ways to prevent cable theft, they are so expensive that they are not worth it. Formula Space has just created an easy-to-install, inexpensive compound that will prevent thieves from cutting cables and taking them away to resell. While the system is not impregnable, it does make cutting difficult enough that thieves will think twice before acting. The time they will need to make the cuts will not be worth it.
The proposed solution, CableGuard, is now fully approved for the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and continental Europe. In fact, Formula Space has already found its first customer, Kempower. The Finnish fast-charging specialist will begin using it at all its locations after testing the technology for eight weeks. It can be installed without removing the cables and is designed to have minimal impact on handling or the user experience. CableGuard uses a high-tech cut-resistant sleeve and a unique forensic marking system to deter and identify criminals.

In other words, if someone tries to cut the cable, not only will they encounter the high-strength protective cover, but the cable will also release a liquid that will ‘mark’ the thieves so that they can be more easily identified. This is similar to the method used by banks and security companies to mark their money bags. The liquid is only visible under ultraviolet light. It is hoped that the CabeGuard system can be used not only at electric car charging points but also in any wiring system requiring special protection and security.

José Miguel Fernández Gómez is the manager of Advanced Fleet Management Consulting, a consulting company specialized in vehicle fleet management and the owner of the fleet management channel on YouTube AdvancedfleetmanagementTube.
Since 2007 I have been working in fleet management consultancy and training for all types of companies, organizations and public administrations. With this course I want to make my experience and knowledge acquired during my work and academic career in this discipline available to my clients.
I carry out consulting projects related to vehicle fleet management and collaborate with companies developing products/services in this market. I have worked at INSEAD (France), one of the best business schools in the world, as a Research Fellow at the Social Innovation Centre-Humanitarian Research Group.
I carried out consulting and research activities in a project for the United Nations refugee organization (UNHCR), optimizing the size and management of the activities of the vehicle fleet, which this organization has distributed throughout the world (6,500 vehicles).
I worked as a fleet manager for five years, for Urbaser, which managed the street cleaning service in Madrid (Spain). I managed a fleet of 1,000 vehicles, made up of various technologies and types of vehicles such as: heavy and light vehicles, vans, passenger cars or sweepers.
I have completed all my academic degrees at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, one of the best universities in Spain, my academic training is as follows:
