As they have not been on sale in Europe and other foreign markets for very long, Chinese cars are relatively unknown in some respects, and it turns out that one such factor has come to light, revealing a hidden cost that is not impossible to identify at first, but which becomes evident over the years.
A recent survey on vehicle depreciation indicates that some Chinese models lose more value in their first few years than others from South Korean and Japanese (or European) brands.
The depreciation of Chinese vehicles in the spotlight
The survey compares depreciation with that of South Korean and Japanese brands. The results of the study conducted in Vietnam between 2022 and 2024 have been published by VN Express International, highlighting the value lost by three very popular MG models compared to others from Kia, Hyundai, and Toyota. The report states that MG cars depreciated between 24% and 35% in the first two years, while Toyota models only lost between 10% and 12% of their value over the same period. Hyundai and Kia, meanwhile, saw depreciation of 17% and 19%, respectively. Not all Chinese cars depreciate equally. Among the reasons for this is that Chinese brands do not yet have the reputation that Toyota has built up over the years, and that Kia and Hyundai have earned over time outside their borders. But there is another reason to consider, which is that Chinese manufacturers are offering significant discounts on their models, meaning that some owners paid a price that has now fallen considerably. This causes the value of the vehicle to drop on the second-hand market, and the owner ends up bearing that extra cost if they want to sell it. In fact, this has been a source of anger for some people, who feel they paid too much, as prices had already fallen a few months later. However, not all Chinese cars lose value equally, and the publication cites the BAIC Beijing X7 model as an example, which depreciated at the same rate as Toyota vehicles. Over time, it will become clearer how Chinese cars age, as there are currently 13 brands from the Asian country on sale in Vietnam, more than half of which arrived last year.

José Miguel Fernández Gómez is the manager of Advanced Fleet Management Consulting, a consulting company specialized in vehicle fleet management and the owner of the fleet management channel on YouTube AdvancedfleetmanagementTube.
Since 2007 I have been working in fleet management consultancy and training for all types of companies, organizations and public administrations. With this course I want to make my experience and knowledge acquired during my work and academic career in this discipline available to my clients.
I carry out consulting projects related to vehicle fleet management and collaborate with companies developing products/services in this market. I have worked at INSEAD (France), one of the best business schools in the world, as a Research Fellow at the Social Innovation Centre-Humanitarian Research Group.
I carried out consulting and research activities in a project for the United Nations refugee organization (UNHCR), optimizing the size and management of the activities of the vehicle fleet, which this organization has distributed throughout the world (6,500 vehicles).
I worked as a fleet manager for five years, for Urbaser, which managed the street cleaning service in Madrid (Spain). I managed a fleet of 1,000 vehicles, made up of various technologies and types of vehicles such as: heavy and light vehicles, vans, passenger cars or sweepers.
