Volvo Trucks is linking up with logistics giant DHL Freight in a bid to accelerate the introduction of heavy-electric trucks to be used for regional transport in Europe.
The project hopes to build on the current main use of electric trucks for shorter distances within cities and urban areas and plans to focus on achieving longer distance heavy transportation. The cooperation includes exclusive, worldwide first pilot tests of a fully electric Volvo FH truck with gross combination weights up to 60 tons.
Starting in March, the truck will operate between two DHL Freight logistics terminals in Sweden, a distance of about 90 miles. During the trial, the companies hope to gain experience and information around the setup and operation of an adequate charging infrastructure. They also expect to collect insights to find the right balance between operated distance, load weight and charging points in daily road freight operations.
