A radar specialist claims vehicle LiDAR and camera technology can be stripped out while making autonomous features cheaper to provide without losing function.
Israel’s Vayyar, specializing in 4D imaging radar technology, claims its production-ready Radar-on-Chip (RoC) platform reduces the amount of sensors automakers have to install on their products thus slashing the cost of production. Its AEC-Q100 chip features up to 48 transceivers, an internal digital signal processor (DSP) and microcontroller unit (MCU) for real-time signal processing.
It claims the platform is capable of seeing through objects and able to operate effectively in all weather conditions and negates the need for expensive LiDAR and cameras. Also, inside the cabin, one multifunctional chip claims to be able to support a multitude of systems including intruder alerts, child presence detection, enhanced seat belt Reminders and eCall to alert emergency services in the event of a crash.
Ian Podkamien, head of automotive at Vayyar, said: “By replacing multiple sensors with our multifunctional, scalable platform, the possibilities for simplicity and savings are substantial. In addition, regulations and standards are rising and to achieve five-star ratings, automakers are moving away from traditional solutions. What’s more, its price point is similar to a single-function 3×4 2D/3D radar solution but with substantial added value.”
