Airbag Thefts on the Rise
Airbag thefts especially among Hondas are on the rise in several states, according to various news reports.
In Columbus, Ohio there was a rash of airbag thefts in January, with thieves specifically targeting those in late model Hondas, reports NBC.
In the spring of 2019 in the District of Columbia, Fairfax County reported 17 airbag thefts and Prince George’s County reported 35, reports WUSA9. This month, several more thefts in D.C. have been reported, specifically from Honda and Acura vehicles.
Every year, some 50,000 airbags are stolen across the country, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Airbags are high dollar parts that thieves can get to easily. Typically, thieves break into the driver side window and can easily remove the airbag from the steering column.
Airbags retail at $1,000 or more at a car dealer, but only cost $50-$200 on the black market. Dishonest repair shops will then sell the stolen airbags to customers at full price, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
