{"id":9734,"date":"2021-02-09T19:36:57","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T18:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=9734"},"modified":"2021-02-09T19:36:57","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T18:36:57","slug":"diagnostics-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2021\/02\/09\/diagnostics-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Choose the Right Diagnostics Tool for Your Fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>Photo: Diesel Laptops<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Fleets have a variety of options when it comes to selecting a diagnostic tool.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">When it comes to aftermarket diagnostic tools, fleets have several options to choose from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Tyler Robertson, CEO of Diesel Laptops, categorizes them as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"incontent01Form\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Handheld units that read basic codes<\/strong>. \u201cThe basic tools will read codes, but usually they can only read \u2018generic\u2019 codes like SAE codes rather than OEM codes,\u201d Robertson says. These tools usually cost $500 or less.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Import tools.<\/strong> These range from $2,500 to $4,000. He says they are easy to use and are self-contained, but may not have the technical support a fleet needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Professional-level multi-brand tools<\/strong> \u201cwill do 99% of what OEM software will do,\u201d he says, but they come with a $7,500 to $10,000 price tag. However, these tools allow a fleet to do the same things a dealer can do diagnostic-wise, Robertson explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dave Covington, chief technology officer for Noregon, divides this way: OEM tools, aftermarket basic scan tools, aftermarket fault-to-fix tools, and remote diagnostic tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The basic tools are often handheld, Covington says, and they allow the fleet to get a general idea of what is going on with the vehicle. \u201cThese are good for a sanity check,\u201d he says. \u201cThey help the fleet understand what\u2019s going on with the vehicle before they take it to a repair facility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The fault-to-fix tools have the ability to holistically diagnose the entire vehicle, says Ben Osborne, Noregon\u2019s marketing communications manager. \u201cAnd they help you move through the diagnostics to the repair itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Covington describes remote diagnostic tools as the new kid on the block that are used \u201cto reach out and touch a truck remotely.\u201d They allow a technician to use the same diagnostic process for a truck on the road as they do for a truck in the shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/trucking-info\/content\/article\/2019-11\/maintenance\/aftermarket-diagnostic-tools1-__-720x516-s.jpg\" alt=\"Select a diagnostic tool that quickly finds the problem. - Photos: Noregon\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"caption-description\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Select a diagnostic tool that quickly finds the problem. Photos: Noregon<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Assess operations and ask the right questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before purchasing any piece of diagnostic equipment, a fleet needs to assess its needs. For example, if all your trucks are from one manufacturer, an OEM tool likely makes the most sense, Robertson says. \u201cBut if you have every make and model under the sun, you probably can\u2019t afford to purchase separate tools for each type of truck in the fleet.\u201d In this case a multi-brand tool may be a better choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Covington says fleets need to decide why they want a scan tool. \u201cDo you just want to look at the truck and be able to decide which repair facility to take it to, or do you want to do repairs yourself?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Alan Tomlinson, director of key accounts at Trimble, says fleets need to decide if they want a tool that reads engine codes only or one that \u201ccan read the rest of the controllers on a vehicle, like the ABS controller, battery power monitor or body controller.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Once a fleet has determined what it wants to do with the tool, it can then begin researching various options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Some questions to ask tool manufacturers include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What makes and models of vehicles does the tool cover?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Is it portable?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Does the tool provide information on how to fix codes?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Does the tool allow for data integration?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Does it have the right connectors to fit your equipment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Can it clear codes?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Can it read the different subsystems on the truck, or does it only read the ECM?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What kind of training do you provide?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What kind of support do you provide?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Are annual fees required to keep the tool working?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Do you offer a money-back guarantee if I don\u2019t like the tool?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Beyond the tool<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">While it\u2019s important to look at the tool itself, fleets need to look beyond the hardware and software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cJust having the right tool is not even close to good enough anymore,\u201d Robertson says. \u201cYou can\u2019t give a $10,000 professional tool that will do everything to someone who does not know how to use it properly. You are just asking for trouble if you do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">No matter how good the tool is, technicians need to be trained on the proper way to use it. The tools are more complicated and powerful than many fleets realize, so training in the proper use is vital. Unfortunately, a lot of people think you just buy a tool, hit a button and you\u2019re done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe truth is, a lot of things have to be done in sequence in order for the tool to work properly,\u201d Robertson says. Having the proper training will ensure fleets get the most value out of the tool and that technicians are able to diagnose the trucks quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In addition to training, fleets also may need ongoing support. Robertson says. \u201cThey need live humans to talk to. They need assistance on the proper things to do.\u201d Fleets need someone they can call when, for example, they have 10 codes and are unsure where to start, or if they can\u2019t get the tool to connect to the truck.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/trucking-info\/content\/article\/2019-11\/maintenance\/aftermarket-diagnostic-tools2-__-720x516-s.jpg\" alt=\"Having the proper tool is not enough. Technicians need to be trained on the tool\u2019s functions.\u00a0Photo: Diesel Laptops<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Expectations and consequences<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Covington believes fleets want diagnostic tools that \u201cquickly get to a fix and are easy to use.\u201d He adds, \u201cThere is a technician shortage, and having a very complex tool or set of tools on which the fleet has to keep their techs trained on can be costly and inefficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He suggests fleets consider a single tool that allows them to do all the things they need to do. \u201cIf a fleet wants to do repairs in its own shop, chances are it wants to diagnose the problem quickly, and once the problem is found have the tool guide the tech through the actual fix,\u201d Covington says. That needs to be done in an efficient manner without having to spend hours doing a Google search for repair information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">If a fleet selects the wrong diagnostic tool, it\u2019ll end up wasting both time and money. A diagnostic tool is just one of many tools a technician has in his or her toolkit in order to properly troubleshoot, diagnose and repair a vehicle. However, the right diagnostic tool can make the process more efficient. But the tool is just one piece of the equation. According to Robertson, \u201cRepair information, technician training and technician skill levels are other necessary elements to successfully diagnose and repair a problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The wrong tool means the technician won\u2019t be able to repair the vehicle. Therefore, according to Covington, fleets need to find a tool that supports all of their vehicles. \u201cSelecting one that is a partial fix might cost them time or mean they need to buy additional tools.\u201d In that case, technicians will have to be trained on the new tools in order to be able to use them properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Osborne says the consequences of selecting the wrong tool can be unexpected downtime. \u201cIf a fleet is using [an engine-only tool], it may be missing a problem elsewhere in the vehicle that is causing the fault.\u201d He believes there are benefits to having a tool that lets the fleet see the entire vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Not being able to diagnose the vehicle quickly and easily or being able to find the real problem is one of the consequences of choosing the wrong diagnostic tool. \u201cYou also could end up getting false positives or improper diagnostics,\u201d Tomlinson says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All diagnostic tools will read codes and live data, but Robertson says that is the \u201ceasy stuff.\u201d Fleets also need to make sure the tool they select matches the functionality they need.
