{"id":9283,"date":"2021-01-14T13:59:31","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=9283"},"modified":"2021-01-14T13:59:31","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:59:31","slug":"brake-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2021\/01\/14\/brake-lights\/","title":{"rendered":"Peterson: Can pulsating brake lights reduce rear-end collisions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vehicle safety lighting manufacturer addresses potential impact of FMCSA pulsating light exemption in recent blog post.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content-body-21150621\" class=\"page-contents__content-body\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmlights.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peterson Manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0recently examined the potential impact of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration\u2019s decision to allow tank truck carriers to use brake-activated pulsating lights on the back of tank trailers, and highlighted its tanker lighting solution, in the following blog post:<\/p>\n<p>Can brake-activated pulsating rear brake lights really reduce rear-end collisions?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a question that may eventually have a definitive answer thanks to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) granting a limited five-year exemption to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.federalregister.gov\/current\/title-49\/subtitle-B\/chapter-III\/subchapter-B\/part-393\/subpart-B\/section-393.25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">49 CFR 393.25<\/a>\u00a0to allow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanktruck.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Tank Truck Carriers<\/a>\u00a0(NTTC) motor carriers to install red or amber brake-activated pulsating lights, in addition to the steady-burning brake lights.<\/p>\n<p>FMCSA found that rear-end collisions often are the result of a failure to respond to slowing or stopped vehicles and account for approximately 30% of all crashes. The most likely suspect is distracted driving. Additionally, FMCSA found that data between 2010 and 2016 showed large trucks are three times more likely to be involved in rear-end accidents resulting in fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) also recognized those tank carriers have a significant stake in protecting trailers against rear-end collisions since they often are hauling hazardous or flammable materials, putting them at an even higher risk for serious or fatal injuries in rear-end crashes.<\/p>\n<p>FMCSA, TCA and NTTC all have come to the conclusion that distracted driving is not only widespread, but on the rise, and tank truck carriers must take further steps to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Groendyke Transport recognized the risk and installed a brake-activated pulsating amber light in addition to the steady-burning brake lights from January 2015 to July 2017. The result was an immediate decrease of 33.7% in rear-end accidents. Pulsating lights, like Peterson Manufacturing\u2019s amber and red LED brake-activated strobes for tanker trailers, provide a series of flashes when the tanker is braking to alert potentially distracted drivers to the slowing or stopping tanker in front of them.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson Manufacturing is proud to announce the immediate availability of its LED Auxiliary Brake-Strobe Light and Harness System, specifically designed to meet the specifications of the FMCSA\u2019s 49 CFR 393.25 five-year exemption.
