{"id":8272,"date":"2020-11-01T12:53:20","date_gmt":"2020-11-01T11:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=8272"},"modified":"2020-11-01T12:53:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-01T11:53:20","slug":"driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2020\/11\/01\/driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Risky driving highest at beginning and end of shifts, Samsara finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Data collected from Samsara indicate that risky behaviors such as harsh braking and distracted driving are more common at the start or end of a driver&#8217;s shift.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Compared to the middle of their shifts, commercial drivers are 26% more likely to exhibit unsafe driving than at the start and 41% at the end of their shift, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsara.com\/blog\/samsara-data-shows-peaks-in-risky-driving-behavior\">according to data gathered by Samsara\u2019s telematics platform<\/a> and analyzed by the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Samsara used four metrics for the analysis: harsh acceleration and harsh braking (measured by g-force); and distracted driving and tailgating (determined by artificial intelligence). That\u2019s nearly double the frequency at the beginning of a shift relative to the middle (39%). Harsh braking has similar results, with 54% more likely at the end versus 28% at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Conversely, distracted driving is 36% more likely during the first part of the shift, which is twice as much as at the middle-to-end difference.<\/p>\n<p><span data-embed-type=\"image\" data-embed-id=\"5f314d46b2e9dc410c8b45f6\"><img class=\" lazyloaded aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/base.imgix.net\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2020\/08\/Aug2020_Data_Insights_Table.5f314d450b12a.png?auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;w=1440\" alt=\"Aug2020 Data Insights Table\" data-src=\"https:\/\/base.imgix.net\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2020\/08\/Aug2020_Data_Insights_Table.5f314d450b12a.png?auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;w=1440\" data-image-id=\"5f314d46b2e9dc410c8b45f6\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-embed-type=\"image\" data-embed-id=\"5f314d46b2e9dc410c8b45f6\"><span class=\"credit\">Graph: Samsara<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At least three factors are believed to contribute to the skewed results at the start and stop of a shift:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><b>Increased traffic in cities: <\/b>Moving from local roads to highways (and vice versa) occur more frequently at the onset or tail-end of a shift, and there are more opportunities for distraction and traffic in these areas.<\/li>\n<li><b>Last-mile stops: <\/b>&#8220;Our data shows there are more short trips (likely due to deliveries and last-mile\u00a0stops) at the beginning and end of shifts, causing drivers to stop and start more frequently, which can create more opportunities for unsafe driving behavior,&#8221; Samsara explained<\/li>\n<li><b>Driver fatigue: <\/b>Seven hours of sleep per night is recommended,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/motorvehicle\/topics\/driverfatigue\/default.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> though 37% of the workforce does not<\/a>\u00a0hit that goal. That grogginess could dull reactions on the road at the start of shift. Other actions that Samsara said would be effective to curb risky behaviors include sharing this new data in safety meetings or company electronic communication, as well as providing data to a driver during a coaching session to reinforce the safety trainer\u2019s mentoring.
