{"id":7662,"date":"2020-09-26T17:13:40","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T15:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=7662"},"modified":"2020-09-26T17:13:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-26T15:13:40","slug":"bendix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2020\/09\/26\/bendix\/","title":{"rendered":"Bendix Highlights Driver Assistance Technologies in Live Demo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i><em>Image: screenshot via live Bendix demo<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Multi-lane autonomous emergency braking, another new feature highlighted during the event, assists drivers in situation where there is a car in the lane after the truck swerves to miss a vehicle in their lane.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taking a cue from many of the virtual events since the onset of COVID-19, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems brought attendees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theonedemo.com\/ttlive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">a live demo<\/a> that could be experienced from their home offices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event highlighted new features of the Wingman Fusion system, as well as a live demonstration of air disc brakes vs. drum brakes and a spotlight on what the company calls Foundations for Future Autonomy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFleets have reported a 70% reduction in rear-end collisions and a 70% reduction in severity in the remaining accidents&#8221; using the Wingman Fusion system, said T.J. Thomas, director \u2014 marketing and customer solutions, controls group, at Bendix.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Demoing the System<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first demo, which showed how the system\u2019s stationary vehicle braking technology helps drivers avoid colliding with stopped vehicles in traffic, preceded a look at a new feature \u2014 highway departure braking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s an extension of the lane departure warning,\u201d said Thomas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When a fatigued or distracted driver begins to veer off the highway and onto the shoulder, the system reads the lines on the road and first alerts the driver with a loud warning sound and then begins to reduce torque and apply the brake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s driver assistance, not driver replacement,\u201d reminded Fred Andersky, director \u2014 demos, sales and service training, at Bendix, who also performed as the driver during the demos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Multi-lane autonomous emergency braking, another new feature highlighted during the event, assists drivers in situations where there is a car in the lane after the truck swerves to miss a vehicle in its lane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt would be very easy for the driver to miss the second vehicle,\u201d said Thomas, since the focus is on the first vehicle he or she is maneuvering to avoid. \u201cThe system gives the driver more time to get back in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Andersky was soon back in the truck to give attendees a look at another feature, rapid-approach braking. Driving a Navistar LT with a loaded trailer adding up to about 65,000 pounds at about 45 mph, he approached a pickup truck that slowed down to about 5 mph. The system alerted Andersky and engaged the braking system, giving him time to avoid colliding with the pickup.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe system gives you an alert and an intervention, and it is designed to mitigate and minimize rear-end collisions,\u201d said Andersky.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Disc Brakes vs. Drum Brakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next demonstration showed the difference between stopping distances for air disc brakes and drum brakes. After performing an initial test with two trucks with cold brakes, a time-lapse film was shown to give attendees a look at how the brakes performed when hot, culminating in a 20<sup>th<\/sup> attempt that resulted in a 188-foot stopping distance for the disc brakes and 301 feet for the drum brakes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/trucking-info\/content\/news\/2020-09\/bendix-drum-disc-__-720x516-s.jpg\" alt=\"The disc brakes' reduced\u00a0 stopping distance was more evident as the demonstration hit the 20th attempt. - Image: screenshot via live Bendix demo\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption-description\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The disc brakes&#8217; reduced\u00a0 stopping distance was more evident as the demonstration hit the 20th attempt. <em>Image: screenshot via live Bendix demo<\/em><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The company also showed off one of its newer brake products, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/343645\/bendix-rolls-out-braking-and-advanced-safety-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">AD-HF air dryer<\/a>, which was released last October.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis was designed with a clean sheet of paper,\u201d said Rich Nagel, director \u2014 marketing and customer solutions, charging group. \u201cIt weighs about 8 pounds less than the previous model and has improved corrosion protection, which is important to fleets and allows for remanufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Advanced Steering and Parking Assistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Benefitting from Bendix\u2019s parent company Knorr-Bremse\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/350101\/bendix-buying-steering-maker-from-wabco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">acquisition of commercial vehicle steering supplier R.H. Sheppard<\/a> Co., the Bendix team demonstrated both its lane keep assistance and active return steer assist features.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUsing the Fusion camera, the system takes the lane line information and uses the actuator to bring the truck back into the lane,\u201d said Dustin Carpenter, steering product group director at Bendix, adding that the system mimics a driver\u2019s action and force so that it does not overturn or maneuver too quickly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The active return feature was demonstrated by having the driver make 90-degree left and right turns and allowing the system to return the steering wheel to center. If the system detects an open door or the removal of the driver\u2019s seat belt, it automatically engages the parking break.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Safety Direct<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During a break from the live demonstration, Thomas and Michelle Huhn, manager of the Safety Direct technical sales and implementation team, previewed four new features of the system.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/327508\/bendix-safetydirect-gets-improved-cameras-capabilities-smartphone-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">SafetyDirect by Bendix CVS<\/a> is a web portal that provides fleet operators with comprehensive feedback on their fleet and drivers, along with videos of severe events.
