{"id":7517,"date":"2020-09-15T16:54:28","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T14:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=7517"},"modified":"2020-09-15T16:54:28","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T14:54:28","slug":"nikola-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2020\/09\/15\/nikola-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Nikola Hits Back at Hindenburg Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola said at the time the video was made that investors \u201cknew the technical capability of the Nikola One.&#8221;\u00a0 <em>Screen grab <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IAToxJ9CGb8\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">via YouTube<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola\u00a0Corporation today issued a press statement commenting on a <a href=\"https:\/\/hindenburgresearch.com\/nikola\/\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">report published September 10<\/a> by Hindenburg Research, a short seller that accuses Nikola of fraud in its portrayal of its battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the statement, Nikola asserted that the \u201copportunistic timing of the report\u201d was designed to provide a false impression to investors and to \u201cnegatively manipulate the market to financially benefit short sellers, including Hindenburg itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/359953\/nikola-orders-nel-electrolysis-equipment-for-hydrogen-infrastructure\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">went public this June with a $26.3 billion evaluation<\/a>,\u00a0saw a more than 30% plunge in its stock price after the Hindenburg report. Nikola announced an agreement last week with General Motors in which GM will produce its Badger battery-electric pickup. Nikola said it is cooperating with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on these issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding the specific Hindenburg accusations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola addressed development of the Nikola Tre battery-electric semi, created in collaboration with IVECO through a joint venture established in 2019 for the short-haul trucking sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Hindenburg report cites a July 2020 podcast in which Nikola founder and CEO Trevor Milton said five of the trucks were \u201ccoming off the assembly line right now in Ulm Germany,\u201d though a spokesperson for Bosch, the manufacturing partner building the trucks, confirmed this month that \u201cthey haven\u2019t made any trucks yet,\u201d according to Hindenburg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola\u00a0said it still expects the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/10122785\/nikola-could-roll-electric-trucks-off-the-line-by-late-2021\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Nikola\u00a0Tre semi-truck to be ready for production<\/a> and available to customers by the fourth quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bosch responded with a statement of its own: \u201cSpecific instances in the [Hindenburg] report quoting a Bosch employee were taken out of context\u201d and \u201cThe employee spoke only about Bosch\u2019s own plans for the IAA industry show and H2Haul project for the European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola\u00a0stated that the five trucks are currently being built and commissioned in Ulm, Germany, and are pre-production builds.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img float-margin\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/fleet-forward\/content\/news\/2020-09\/nikola_tre1-__-720x516-s.png\" alt=\"Nikola offered this photo to demonstrate the development of the Nikola Tre battery-electric semi, taking place in Ulm, Germany. - Photo courtesy of Nikola.\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption-description\">Nikola offered this photo to demonstrate the development of the Nikola Tre battery-electric semi, taking place in Ulm, Germany.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo courtesy of Nikola.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Hindenburg report analyzes a video in which Milton claims that Nikola has developed proprietary inverter tech. The video shows an inverter with tape on it, which it claims hides the specs for an off-the-shelf inverter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAt no time did\u00a0Nikola\u00a0state that the inverter on the prototype truck shown in the video was the Company\u2019s or would be used in production,\u201d Nikola responded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNikola\u00a0has been designing, engineering and working on its own inverters for quite some time. The Company does use third-party parts in prototype vehicles, some of which may be subsequently swapped out for its own parts in production. This is common practice among vehicle manufacturers and\u00a0Nikola\u00a0often blocks supplier names from the view of media and competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Hindenburg report takes Nikola to task for overstating agreements with Anheuser Busch and Republic Services, when in fact those companies are not obligated to purchase any vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola did not respond to the contracts themselves but stated that the Nikola Two hydrogen-electric powered semi-truck is expected to have a prototype delivered by the end of 2021 and a production version in the second half of 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nikola said the gearbox, batteries, inverters, suspension, brakes, steering, and other systems were all functional.
