In an announcement today, the Swedish manufacturer revealed the new move is part of Vision 2020 \u2013 a project aimed at preventing all deaths in road traffic accidents.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Vision 2020<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the last few years, Volvo has rolled out new types of technology to improve safety, but it\u2019s now limiting overall speed in all its cars. While safety tech is helpful at all speeds, as you\u2019d expect, its ability to actually prevent deaths is reduced at higher velocities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Capping V-max is a simple way of getting closer to its Vision 2020 target, and was one of three \u2018so-called gaps towards zero\u2019 in Volvo\u2019s current strategy. Volvo believes the two other key areas to tackle are intoxication and distraction \u2013 though it remains to be seen exactly how the brand aims to address them. Perhaps biometric monitoring, along with less fiddly touchscreens?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/1040x0\/volvo_v90_t8_10.jpg?scale=down\" alt=\"\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/480x0\/volvo_v90_t8_10.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/720x0\/volvo_v90_t8_10.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/1040x0\/volvo_v90_t8_10.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\" data-uuid=\"interchange-kdyeu0aq4\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018Volvo is a leader in safety: we always have been and we always will be,\u2019 said H\u00e5kan Samuelsson, Volvo\u2019s president and chief executive. \u2018Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it\u2019s worth doing if we can even save one life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For some background, within the current Volvo range, the lowest top speed is 118mph, and the highest is 155mph. And while the 112mph limit won\u2019t have a huge affect in the UK, it\u2019ll be interesting to see the reaction in countries with unrestricted roads.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Semi-autonomous rules?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the overall speed caps, Volvo revealed it\u2019s also looking at using geo-fencing and other tech to enforce speed-limits around sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver\u00b4s behaviour, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction,\u2019 said Mr. Samuelsson. \u2018We don\u2019t have a firm answer to this question, but believe we should take leadership in the discussion and be a pioneer.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/1040x0\/volvo_v90_t8_05.jpg?scale=down\" alt=\"\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/480x0\/volvo_v90_t8_05.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/720x0\/volvo_v90_t8_05.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/pagefiles\/86652\/1040x0\/volvo_v90_t8_05.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\" data-uuid=\"interchange-kdyeu0aq5\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s certainly the beginning of a much larger discussion. While taking some control out of a drivers\u2019 hands seems like a good thing initially, it\u2019s possible that in certain circumstances more speed could actually stop an accident from happening. If Volvo\u2019s speed cap somehow causes an accident, what happens then?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Volvo says it\u2019ll reveal more about its plans to to tackle intoxication and distraction at an event in Gothenburg on March 20.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Fast Volvos?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And more thing, Volvo isn\u2019t reducing the overall performance of its cars \u2013 just the top speed \u2013 so Swedish fast estates like the legendary 850 T5 and later V90 T8 twin-engine will still be around.
