Volvo Trucks North America deployed its first pilot\u00a0VNR\u00a0Electric\u00a0truck\u00a0in Southern California\u00a0as part of the Volvo LIGHTS\u00a0(Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions)\u00a0project. The first\u00a0pilot\u00a0Volvo\u00a0VNR\u00a0Electric\u00a0truck will operate\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Volvo Trucks North America\u00a0TEC Equipment\u00a0dealership\u00a0in Fontana, California.\u00a0The zero-emission truck will transport local parts between the TEC Equipment dealerships in Fontana and La Mirada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Volvo LIGHTS is a collaboration with the South Coast Air Quality Management District and 13\u00a0other organizations to develop a blueprint to\u00a0 introduce battery-electric trucks and equipment into the market at scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVolvo Trucks is proud to lead the way in the\u00a0sustainable\u00a0electrification of freight movement. Working with\u00a0our dealership,\u00a0TEC Equipment,\u00a0to pilot the\u00a0first\u00a0Volvo VNR\u00a0Electric\u00a0on the road and in real-world\u00a0applications\u00a0is\u00a0an exciting step toward our\u00a0plans to commercialize these zero-emission trucks in North America\u00a0this fall,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Peter\u00a0Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. \u201cThe\u00a0all-electric\u00a0Volvo VNR\u00a0will become the ideal truck model for short- and regional-haul applications,\u00a0such as\u00a0urban distribution\u00a0and\u00a0drayage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The TEC Fontana dealership has two 50-kW chargers inside its truck maintenance bays, as well as a\u00a0150-kW\u00a0charger located outside to let fleet customers fast charge at the dealership.\u00a0Over the past year, the Volvo LIGHTS team\u00a0worked with\u00a0Southern California Edison\u00a0(the\u00a0local\u00a0utility)\u00a0and\u00a0San Bernardino County to safely\u00a0install\u00a0the high-power infrastructure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis experience in\u00a0designing, planning, and installing high-power chargers for electric trucks\u00a0has taught us\u00a0how critical it is to engage a variety of stakeholders early on,\u201d said Aravind Kailas, advanced technology policy director for Volvo Group North America. \u201cThe Volvo LIGHTS project has provided valuable insight into how to build realistic project timelines. Despite the unavoidable delays due to the COVID-19 situation, we\u2019re proud the\u00a0team has been able to continue moving the project forward.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More About the Volvo LIGHTS Project<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

The Volvo LIGHTS project was made possible by an award to South Coast AQMD of $44.8 million from CARB as part of California Climate Investments. CCI is a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment \u2013 particularly in disadvantaged communities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, South Coast AQMD contributed $4 million from the Clean Fuels Fund and awarded a $45.6M contract to the Volvo Group to design and implement the project.\u00a0 Volvo and its partners have promised no less than $45.7M matching contribution to increase the total project value to over $91M for South Coast AQMD to administer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Volvo LIGHTS team also includes partnerships with Rio Hondo College and San Bernardino Valley College to create electric vehicle repair and service technician programs to prepare the region\u2019s workforce for the introduction of battery-electric freight trucks. The colleges have already begun introducing the curriculum in the classroom and enrolling students for the fall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rio Hondo and SBVC are also working with the Volvo LIGHTS team to design a training program with fire departments within the Inland Empire communities\u2014including San Bernardino County (which covers the TEC Fontana dealership), Chino, and Ontario\u2014to ensure that the region\u2019s first responders are fully prepared to safely respond in case of an incident or accident involving a heavy-duty battery-electric vehicle.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
