{"id":5433,"date":"2020-04-28T16:50:59","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T14:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=5433"},"modified":"2020-04-28T16:50:59","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T14:50:59","slug":"fleet-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2020\/04\/28\/fleet-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Effective Leadership &#038; Fleet Safety &#8211; Highlights from our Webinar with Brake, the Road Safety Charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Brake, the road safety charity, recently hosted a webinar with Lytx titled \u201c<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalfleetchampions.org\/resources\/effective-leadership-for-safe-and-healthy-mobility-in-fleets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-internal=\"false\">Effective Leadership for Safe and Healthy Mobility in Fleets<\/a>.\u201d Fleet safety leaders from organizations in the logistics, utilities, and construction sector all presented various angles on the topic of effective leadership and fleet safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Below is a snapshot of the most important points from this webinar:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>What Leaders of Strong Safety Programs Look Like<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Using personal experience, best practices, and industry research, a few of the webinar\u2019s presenters described the qualities that leaders with strong safety programs have in common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">There was agreement that the <strong>skills to successfully lead safety<\/strong> are the same as those needed to lead outstanding organizations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pays attention to detail<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Focuses on execution<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Creates standardized and disciplined procedures<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Understands roles<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Uses meaningful metrics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Has personal accountability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Aligns group vision and mission<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In a broader sense, an effective leader is engaging. The stereotype of a leader as someone with vision, confidence, and all the right answers isn\u2019t necessarily true. Being able to engage others in a safety program\u00a0is more important than being a visionary or fountain of knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Also, the best <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lytx.com\/en-us\/fleet-management\/fleet-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-internal=\"false\">fleet safety<\/a> leaders have these<strong> behaviors in common:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Modeling.<\/strong> Leaders model the behavior they want to see and step to the front to show it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Facilitating.<\/strong> Leaders get involved in the team\u2019s needs. They find simple solutions for complex problems\u2014small ways to make things better.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Enabling.<\/strong> Leaders empower others to figure out the answer versus just giving orders or reciting safety procedures. They shine the spotlight on their team.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And to truly embed a culture of safety, a leader should have these <strong>four foundational beliefs:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The best action an organization can take to align and engage employees is to make them feel valued. A culture of positive safety does that.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A journey to safety excellence has to be a crusade, not a casual endeavor. People will not normally evolve to change of this magnitude. It must be deliberate, with a crafted process and messaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">There must be energy around the vision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The journey must be leadership driven.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>8 Best Practices For Fleet Safety Leaders<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The webinar also covered the top safety program practices that all fleet safety leaders should know:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>1. Create a compelling <\/strong><a class=\"hooked\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/resources.lytx.com\/reduce-costs\" data-internal=\"standard\"><strong>ROI<\/strong><\/a><strong> story to win and retain the support of senior leadership.<\/strong> Safety is not a revenue generating department. It&#8217;s an expense. Leaders need to bring programs in that will lower expenses (e.g. the reduction in collision costs) and that&#8217;s the ROI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2. Elevate employee engagement with a strong safety culture.<\/strong> Some tips for driving engagement include: use <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lytx.com\/en-us\/our-clients\/success-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-internal=\"false\">case studies<\/a> to create urgency around safety, build internal coalitions, have a vision and broadcast it widely, get some short-term wins, and empower front-line managers by making them accountable for progress and giving them the tools to achieve.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>3. Keep drivers on track with quick, continuous coaching. <\/strong>On-going coaching connects drivers to the safety culture and is more effective than episodic training. Focus on remediation and retention, instead of discipline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>4. Boost buy-in with effective communications.<\/strong> It\u2019s impossible to over communicate a safety program. Use all the tools available (email, posters, texts, etc.) for safety communications and remember it\u2019s a two-way street\u2014take feedback from drivers as they\u2019re the people in the field every day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>5. Leverage analytics to increase safety program effectiveness.<\/strong> Data and technology help identify and focus on the most important areas of risk in order to measure progress and continually improve.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>6. Integrate all safety technologies.<\/strong> Making sure all technologies, ranging from vehicle systems to <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/lytx.com\/en-us\/resources\/articles\/telematics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-internal=\"false\">video telematics<\/a> software, play nice together helps fleets scale and get accurate data to support their safety initiatives.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>7. Create accountability.<\/strong> Everyone should know their role within the safety program and how they\u2019ll be measured. This sets a clear path to reach all safety goals. Remember to also celebrate achievements and their positive impacts \u2013 reductions in collisions or emissions not only save money but also improves and saves lives.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>8. Build team spirit. <\/strong>The safety mentality for drivers and other fleet team members should shift from reactive (natural instincts), to dependent (supervision), then independent (self), and finally interdependent (team spirit).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Leadership of fleet safety doesn\u2019t just happen. It needs to be enabled through committed and knowledgeable directors working toward defined and well-written procedures.
