The selection includes an initial order for 100 systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The buses will utilize BAE Systems\u2019 Series-ER technology, which is a hybrid powertrain that is able to extend the range of the bus. It is able to offer engine-off driving modes for up to 35% of the time thanks to a high-capacity energy storage system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe Series-ER system is highly reliable and an important step to full electrification for Ireland,\u201d\u00a0said Steve Trichka, vice president and general manager of Power &amp; Propulsion Solutions at\u00a0BAE\u00a0Systems. \u201cThis technology gets Ireland closer to zero emission operations, reducing fuel consumption and improving air quality in the areas where its people live, work, and visit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With Series-ER, the\u00a0buses will be able to drive on clean electric power through designated low and zero emission zones. The system uses\u00a0global positioning software to enable the buses to run in full electric mode when they enter the zones. The buses switch to battery power when the engine is off \u2013 eliminating the release of exhaust emissions in populated areas such as near schools, hospitals, and tourist attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The technology is part of the company\u2019s 20-plus years of experience developing and integrating electric propulsion systems and accessories for transit buses. Series-ER builds on that foundation, maximizing the efficiency of the energy storage system. With increased battery capacity, the system provides\u00a0zero emission travel without the need for the bus to stop and recharge.
