{"id":4795,"date":"2020-03-27T13:02:46","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T12:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=4795"},"modified":"2020-03-27T13:03:58","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T12:03:58","slug":"practicing-social-distancing-after-an-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2020\/03\/27\/practicing-social-distancing-after-an-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"Practicing Social Distancing After an Accident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">While the roads across the country have become less congested as more people stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still going to be times when a fleet driver may find him or herself involved in a collision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the case of a minor collision, where neither party is injured, the people involved would pull to the side of the vehicle,\u00a0walk up to each other and begin exchanging information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But in a world where the Center for Disease Control recommends people to keep\u00a0at least six feet apart from each other in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19,\u00a0certain steps have changed in the process of exchanging information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">We reached out to AAA to see if it had any guidance in maneuvering through the post-collision process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The main change is to not physically exchange insurance cards or any type of identification card, according to AAA. Instead, share any needed insurance and license information verbally, with each person\u00a0involved\u00a0writing down the information, AAA added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Since you\u2019ll be exchanging phone information, you can also take photos of the needed identifying cards and send that to the other person. The goal is to abide by CDC\u00a0recommendations\u00a0and stay six feet apart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the event that your vehicle is non-operational after the collision, don\u2019t hitch a ride with the tow truck operator, if possible as the distance in the cab of the tow truck between the operator and you will likely be less than six feet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIf your car needs to be towed, consider\u00a0making arrangements\u00a0for your own transportation \u2014 again, to adhere to social distancing\u00a0recommendations\u00a0as much as possible,\u201d according to AAA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Apart from this guidance, AAA also provided a general checklist of things to do after an accident.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The first is to assist anyone involved in the accident that may have been injured. If anyone requires medical attention, call 911.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">After that, ensure that all vehicles have been moved to a safe place, trying your best to not block oncoming traffic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then notify the police and submit a report. The police might not come to the scene of the collision, and that\u2019s OK, you can file a report by visiting a local police department or automobile insurance agency. However,\u00a0police departments and insurance agencies might have new policies pertaining to outside visitors at this time, so it may be a good practice\u00a0for fleet managers\u00a0to check with local agencies right now to have\u00a0that information available\u00a0for your drivers\u00a0before a collision occurs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Afterward\u00a0document the scene and exchange information. This step involves taking photos of the\u00a0involved\u00a0vehicles to assess damage, taking photos of the surrounding area, and exchanging the information\u00a0such as names, addresses\/emails, vehicle information (makes, models, years), VIN\/license plate numbers, driver\u2019s license numbers,\u00a0and\u00a0insurance\u00a0carriers\u00a0and policy numbers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This information mainly applies to fleets that are insured by an insurance company.
