Photo courtesy of MTI.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">What Happens When Autonomous Technology Goes Wrong?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As\u00a0autonomous vehicles\u00a0become more commonplace and automakers invest millions into the\u00a0development\u00a0of such technologies, consumers and researchers alike are left to ponder the implications of such technology failing during operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Mineta Transportation Institute\u00a0published a new report,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transweb.sjsu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/1710-Favaro-AV-Disengagements.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Analysis of Disengagements in Semi-Autonomous Vehicles: Drivers\u2019 Takeover Performance and Operational Implications<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0which explores this case scenario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The study looks at how humans interact with AV\u2019s if it loses control while on the road. It measured how quickly and deliberately the car alerted drivers and how efficiently the driver could effectively react and take control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The study tested 40 individuals starting at 18 years old to 55 years plus. Each driver was placed in a car simulator capable of handling both human and autonomous driving. The test measured response times and vehicle drift from a centerline under several different scenarios.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/fleet-forward\/content\/news\/mti.png\" alt=\"The report takes into consideration how AVs can affect roadways and drivers.\n - Photo courtesy of MTI.\u00a0\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption-description\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The report takes into consideration how AVs can affect roadways and drivers. Photo courtesy of MTI.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Key results showed that between two different speed settings (high speed of 65 mph and a low speed of 55 mph), the lower speed yielded better performance. Out of all the three different age groups tested, the older participants performed better in overall driving and driving after autonomous technology failure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Researchers also found that individuals tended to increase their speed and steer after taking control of the vehicles, as opposed to braking. About half of the drivers also reported not seeing the visual warning on the central console but did hear the auditory warnings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The report takes into consideration how AVs can affect roadways and drivers.
