In 2017, NHTSA <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812603\">counted<\/a> 795 fatal collisions linked to drowsy driving. That\u2019s down from 803 deaths in <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/Publication\/812456\">2016<\/a> and 824 in <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/Publication\/812376\">2015<\/a>. While the differences might be small, every life counts, which is why major organizations, from health and safety advocates to law enforcement and government agencies, continue to spread the word about the perils of driving while drowsy.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Drowsy-Driving-Fatalities-NHTSA_2014-2017.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lytx.com\/getattachment\/86c035a9-aff7-4a91-bc6a-feb19477a223\/Drowsy-Driving-Fatalities-NHTSA_2014-2017.png?width=500&amp;height=469\" alt=\"Drowsy-Driving-Fatalities-NHTSA_2014-2017.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Facts About Drowsy Driving<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Commercial vehicle drivers are among the groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/dsdrowsydriving\/index.html\">considered most at risk<\/a> for drowsy driving. As many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/driver-safety\/sleep-apnea\/driving-when-you-have-sleep-apnea\">28 percent of truck drivers<\/a> have mild to severe sleep apnea, according to a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the American Transportation Research Institute of the American Trucking Associations.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Prevent Drowsy Driving<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Combat Fatigue With These Four Expert Tips<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>1. Get Enough Sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How much is enough sleep? The National Sleep Foundation has issued <a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/STREPchanges_1.png\">these recommendations<\/a> by age. But each person is different. NASCAR driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/busch-uses-strict-diet-workout-regimen-as-key-tool-for-success-in-run-at-the-double\">Kurt Busch<\/a> averages seven to eight hours. NBA player <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/blog\/playbook\/tech\/post?id=797&amp;_slug_=sleep-tracking-brings-new-info-to-athletes\">LeBron James<\/a> sleeps 12 hours a night. NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald gets nine hours, but likes to bump it up to 10 or 11 hours the night before a game. Professional drivers also need sufficient sleep to perform. Sleep specialist Dr. Meier H. Kryger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/sleep-and-be-well\/201506\/are-you-getting-enough-sleep-theres-only-one-way-tell\">sums it up<\/a> by saying, \u201cIt is the amount of sleep that leaves you wide-awake, alert, in a great mood, and functioning at your best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>2. Take a Nap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/safety\/driver-safety\/cmv-driving-tips-driver-fatigue\">recommends<\/a> that commercial drivers take a 10- to 45-minute nap if they feel drowsy, then allow 15 minutes to fully wake up afterwards. Even if you don\u2019t yet feel sleepy, a nap can help prevent fatigue later on. Also naps are more effective than caffeine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>3. Find Out Which Medications Can Induce Drowsiness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Many painkillers, muscle relaxants, antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and even cold medicines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drug-medication\/medications-fatigue-and-sleepiness#1\">can make you feel drowsy<\/a>. Find out which ones have the potential to make you feel tired and consult with your doctor for alternatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>4. Practice Good \u201cSleep Hygiene\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sleep researchers have come up with a list of conditions for a good night\u2019s sleep.
