It&#8217;s all about preventing more serious problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sensors are tiny in wheel-end monitoring systems, but they are powerful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The TraX from Gothenburg, Sweden-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skf.com\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">SKF<\/a> looks different but functions very similarly to <a href=\"https:\/\/conmet.com\/innovation\/digital\/preset-plus-smarthub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">ConMet&#8217;s PreSet Plus SmartHub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The SKF TraX mounts to any wheel of a heavy-duty vehicle and wirelessly transmits data to an onboard transponder. That data on wheel-bearing vibration and temperature is then relayed to a maintenance location or the professional truck driver\u2019s smartphone app, which alerts fleet technicians and the driver long before a failure in the wheel end or hub or tire or anywhere else occurs. If a thermal event is detected, the truck\u2019s driver is notified immediately to pull over to avoid a failure that could be catastrophic\u2014such as those wheel-offs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hendrickson\u2019s trailer wheel-end monitoring product\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hendrickson-intl.com\/company\/media-events\/press-releases\/watchman-wheel-end-sensor-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Watchman powered by the Sensata Vehicle Area Network<\/a>\u2014pays attention to tires and the brakes of a wheel assembly, explained Steve Hampson, director of electronic controls for the Woodbridge, Illinois-based aftermarket manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hendrickson also is known as a maker and supplier of medium- and heavy-duty mechanical, elastomeric and air suspensions, integrated and nonintegrated axle and brakes systems, auxiliary lift axle systems, parabolic and multi-leaf springs, stabilizers, and bumpers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for Watchman, it relays trailer tire-pressure and wheel-end temperature data to a fleet via the product\u2019s trailer telematics system, according to a Hendrickson fact sheet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-77d64d1d=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">\n<div class=\"image-credit\" data-v-8ec23a5a=\"\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">\n<div class=\"image-credit-text-wrapper\" data-v-8ec23a5a=\"\">\n<div class=\"image-credit-text\" data-v-8ec23a5a=\"\">Hendrickson<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"icon-wrapper\" data-v-8ec23a5a=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon mdi:image-area icon\" data-v-76cf18d2=\"\" data-v-8ec23a5a=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-77d64d1d=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">\n<div title=\"Hendrickson Watchman and how it works.\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\"><img title=\"Hendrickson Watchman and how it works.\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2022\/07\/WATCHMAN_WES__1_.62cc83a721cf7.png?auto=format,compress&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max\" alt=\"Hendrickson Watchman and how it works.\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ebm-image-caption\" data-v-77d64d1d=\"\">Hendrickson Watchman and how it works.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watchman integrates with Tiremaxx, which is Hendrickson\u2019s tire-pressure monitoring system that helps minimize tire wear and maximize fuel economy by managing trailer tire pressures. Tiremaxx has tire-inflating and pressure-relieving, inflating, and equalizing capabilities, according to the fact sheet. The manufacturer worked with the Society of Automotive Engineers on industry standards for the communication of data and fault codes for trailer wheel-end information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis common platform allows Hendrickson\u2019s Watchman wheel-end sensor to be used by OEMs to provide crucial trailer data to their customers,\u201d Omar Fernandez, director of marketing at Hendrickson Trailer Commercial Vehicle Systems, said in a statement from the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hampson added additional perspective on thermal events, what causes these events, and what Watchman does for fleet maintenance managers and drivers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBrakes are the heat generator,\u201d he told <i>FleetOwner<\/i>, adding that numerous wheel-end components generate excess temperatures, hubs and bearings among them. \u201cBy the very nature of it, the wheel end gets hot by use of brakes. There\u2019s normal operations of brakes, controlled, [but] it\u2019s when it exceeds those thresholds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about wheel-end health,\u201d he added. \u201cThat can equate to a lot of things. It\u2019s predominantly focused on the tire, looking at the pressure in the tire system and making sure that it\u2019s level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watchman warns a driver that he or she is navigating the road with deflated tires, Hampson also noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThat\u2019s what leads in some cases to what they call \u2018thermal events.\u2019 You\u2019re trying to prevent that thermal event from occurring. We also feel the Watchman product [will identify] slow leaks. Small leaks become bigger leaks, which become even bigger leaks.\u2019 The inflation system is keeping up with it, but it\u2019s something you should have looked at soon. Address thermal events before they happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Watchman has temperature sensors, mounted in the hubcap at the wheel end. \u201cWe do get indications if that area starts heating up\u201d beyond normal operation, he said. \u201cAnother indicator of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early warnings of low tire pressure or leakage and\/or elevated temperatures can help minimize the cost of repairs and maintenance of crucial wheel-end components. Watchman\u2019s hubcap-mounted, battery-powered wheel-end sensors transmit wireless signals to the gateway module, collecting the data and acting as the trailer\u2019s communications hub. The information will be transmitted from the gateway module to the trailer telematics device for transmission to the fleet\u2019s back office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just like SKF TraX and ConMet\u2019s PreSet Plus SmartHub do, Hendrickson is working with telematics providers to integrate data from the Watchman wheel-end sensor into their telematic solutions, to provide timely and actionable data for enhanced fleet efficiency and uptime. If the temp of the wheel end elevates into a dangerous operating zone, a eutectic screw installed in the press plug melts, causing pressurized air to vent through the hubcap tee vent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A warning light becomes visible in the driver\u2019s rearview mirror, allowing him or her to pull over to avoid a catastrophic event. Air escaping through the hubcap vent will audibly identify the problem wheel end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The TireView \u201cgateway\u201d can be mounted inside or outside the cab of a truck, can even be located inside a trailer, and it can port with certain manufacturers\u2019 electronic logging devices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDepends on the configuration of vehicles,\u201d Sharkey said. \u201cRight now, everybody wants smart trailers, so they want all the data going to one location. We\u2019d rather integrate with somebody else\u2019s platform. The important stuff is the data. We don\u2019t care how it gets there. We\u2019re gonna help you learn when there\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"gam-1c6e-a3c4-4b1-45e0\" class=\"ebm-ad__embed\" data-google-query-id=\"CJnJjaa5__gCFTQFBgAdAs0LSQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21687441225\/fleetowner\/technology\/rail2_4__container__\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another P.S.I. product, TireView LIVE, supplies tire analytics to the fleet\u2019s existing telematics provider. \u201cWhat we do with all this data is the TireView Live, the portal that gets the data,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe store the data, which allows the user to do reports on it. When did I pick up my puncture? When did my temperature start to go up? Sometimes there\u2019s a brake issue, not a tire issue. Sometimes slack adjusters in brakes are not adjusted properly, causing \u2018brake drag.\u2019 They can catch brake component issues before [the parts] must be replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bendix weighs in with its own TPMS system, SmarTire, but sensing technology added into the system can detect elevated temps within the air disc brakes (ADB), providing early warning for when pads are nearing their replacement interval. It provides a signal via telematics that fleets can use to schedule maintenance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The system helps lower maintenance costs by reducing the need for technicians to measure friction and by optimizing friction replacement schedules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the system provides alerts when pads are reaching the point of replacement, it protects costly ADB components, such as rotors, from being damaged by worn-out pads. Both systems are also linked to Bendix\u2019s ACom PRO diagnostic software.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The key to addressing wheel-end and tire problems before they become failures and even emergencies is the technology. Monitoring the tire and wheel area of trailers and tractors has come a long way in the last 10 to 15 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using the technology can reduce downtime in the shop and help avoid repairs that are expensive to fleets by catching problems early.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Teacher of technicians weighs in<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And a veteran technician\u2019s view on these wheel-end monitoring technologies?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They\u2019re \u201canother set of eyes in the maintenance arena, to catch things that are preventive,\u201d said Bryan Lewis, an ASE master truck technician and former instructor who retired from wrench-turning five years ago but now works as a consultant. \u201cWe have to up our preventive maintenance game. The more eyes and ears you have on that vehicle, the better, to catch something possibly catastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said from his limited exposure to wheel-end monitoring technology, it can be used to ease drivability complaints. \u201cI\u2019m talking about the shakes and shimmies. With this vibration detector, it\u2019ll point you to which wheel is potentially creating this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m an advocate for telematics and data,\u201d Lewis added. The technology, however, \u201cdoesn\u2019t replace the basics. We still have to install the wheel seal properly, adjust the wheel bearing properly, so forth. I can\u2019t echo enough the basics, but this technology is another set of eyes.
