More customers want to know what fleets are doing to reduce their carbon footprints. Successful carriers suggest starting with transparency and a plan\u2014while waiting for zero-emission technology to mature.<\/p>\n

Decarbonizing the entire trucking industry can seem impossible. Zero-emission technology still is developing and most of the U.S. lacks the infrastructure<\/a> to support alternative fuels such as electric, hydrogen, and natural gas. But fleets have to start somewhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s interesting. I\u2019m sure that, like a lot of people in this room, we were doing sustainability, CSR [corporate social responsibility] before that\u2019s what we called it,\u201d said Matt McLelland, VP of sustainability and innovation at Covenant Logistics<\/a> (No. 54 on FleetOwne<\/i>r 500: For-Hire<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Customers now want to know more about the carrier\u2019s roadmap to sustainability,\u00a0McLelland\u00a0and other fleet leaders said during an executive roundtable discussion at this year’s\u00a0Advanced Clean Transportation Expo<\/a> in Long Beach.<\/p>\n

Craig Harper, chief sustainability officer at J.B. Hunt Transport<\/a>, said he hopes the fueling infrastructure and zero-emission equipment can be built fast enough to keep up with his customers\u2019 questions about what J.B. Hunt is doing to move freight with clean technologies.<\/p>\n

Until then, the No. 5 for-hire 500<\/a>\u00a0carrier launched Clean Transport<\/a>. J.B. Hunt offers some customers carbon-offset credits equivalent to the emissions created by their shipments. The customers can select specific carbon credit projects. These include reforestation, forest management, regenerative agriculture, and clean power generation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a global problem,\u201d Harper said. \u201cWe see carbon offsets as a way to take action now while we’re all waiting on these other technologies to come online. Meanwhile, we’re doing things to reduce emissions. Because first and foremost, all of us ought to have the goal to reduce the emissions\u2014to eliminate the emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harper said creating J.B. Hunt\u2019s first sustainability report was a big undertaking, but it helped the fleet develop goals and become more transparent.<\/p>\n
