That&#8217;s an argument also backed by ATRI and Tier 1 suppliers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NEW ORLEANS\u2014The future of trucking is clean, but battery-electric transport is just a fantasy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Transportation futurist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garrygolden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Gary Golden<\/a> told fleet leaders gathered here for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Solera<\/a> Outlook 2022 why he believes hydrogen will win out in the race to power their electric trucks and personal vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the energy and transportation world, there is a debate between \u201cpure electrification\u201d and decarbonization, he said. The former focuses on electrifying everything\u2014from transportation to manufacturing. \u201cDecarbonization says we\u2019re going to try to electrify as much as we can\u2014but we can\u2019t deny the role that molecule fuels play in the world,\u201d Golden explained. \u201cMolecule fuels, chemical bonds, deliver 80% of the world\u2019s energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI believe that electrification\u2014particularly in the transportation sector\u2014is what we would call a fantasy wrapped in an illusion,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t buy it. I don\u2019t believe it. I don\u2019t care what anybody says. I don\u2019t care when a person is like, \u2018I have an electric car. I love it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hydrogen fuel-cell trucks are the most decarbonized freight vehicles, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/article\/21240827\/atri-study-offers-warnings-on-electric-class-8s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">recent American Transportation Research Institute report<\/a>. \u201cBattery-electric trucks are only about 30% cleaner than diesel trucks,\u201d Daniel Murray, ATRI SVP, said during a breakout session at Solera\u2019s first user conference since expanding its fleet solutions through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/technology\/article\/21242636\/solera-touts-global-force-it-brings-to-north-american-fleet-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">several recent acquisitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During his keynote speech that morning, Golden said the future of EVs is about the motor, not the battery. \u201cHow we deliver the electricity to that motor is of debate,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut it\u2019s the motor that defines the EV.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit-text-wrapper\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit-text\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">Into The Future | Gary Golden<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-icon-wrapper\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon mdi:image-area ebm-icon\" data-v-76cf18d2=\"\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\">\n<div title=\"Electrification Vs Decarbonization Golden Futurist\" data-v-5fdbdc55=\"\"><img title=\"Electrification Vs Decarbonization Golden Futurist\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2022\/05\/Electrification_vs_decarbonization_Golden_futurist.628f02a390f1b.png?auto=format,compress&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max\" alt=\"Electrification Vs Decarbonization Golden Futurist\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EV conundrum<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Golden\u00a0asserted that the cheapest EV powertrain is a small battery, hydrogen fuel cell, and capacitor.\u00a0 \u201cBecause when you look at the mature, full-picture, long-term cost curve per kilowatt of a battery versus a fuel cell, fuel cells will be cheaper than batteries,\u201d he said. \u201cNot today, but in a mature manufacturing world, fuel cells will always be cheaper because they don\u2019t have the mineral requirements that batteries do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"gam-1edf-291e-d3c-e67a\" class=\"ebm-ad__embed\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-google-query-id=\"COzzpIaGlPgCFbGBUQods-MPTA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21687441225\/fleetowner\/default\/iav_0__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21687441225\/fleetowner\/default\/iav_0\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" role=\"region\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21687441225\/fleetowner\/default\/iav_0\" width=\"4\" height=\"4\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-container-id=\"d\" data-load-complete=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Murray noted that building an electric truck is less green than producing diesel equipment. \u201cElectric trucks are six times more polluting than a diesel truck,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy is that? You need cobalt, lithium, nickel, manganese to make these lithium-ion batteries. And that\u2019s very expensive to mine that out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Class 8 BEVs are limited to 250 miles with the largest batteries, according to ATRI\u2019s research. The battery\u2019s weight and size reduce freight capabilities, too, Murray noted. The replacement batteries, which Murray said could cost as much as a new diesel tractor, would need to be replaced every four to seven years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnd there\u2019s no place to charge these,\u201d Murray said. \u201cElon Musk stopped bragging about building a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2020\/11\/24\/tesla-semi-electric-truck-621-miles-range-elon-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">600-mile-charge truck<\/a>. You haven\u2019t heard that in two years because that is a physical impossibility. The best you\u2019ll get on a charge\u2014which will take you two to four hours to get to 80%\u2014is a 200-mile trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With trucking facing a driver shortage and most drivers paid by the mile, Murray said: \u201cNow you\u2019re going to tell your drivers that instead of driving 500 miles, I need you to stop every 150 to 200 miles. You\u2019re not going to get paid, but I need you to stop and charge for four or five hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/article\/21241028\/half-of-class-8-regionalhaul-tractors-are-electrifiable-now-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">EV trucking study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency<\/a> said that half of U.S. regional and short-haul Class 8 trucks are ripe for electrification today. <a href=\"https:\/\/nacfe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">NACFE<\/a> said that half of the 930,000 Class 8 regional operations could go electric. EV proponents suggest that \u201ceveryone will just plug in at home,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a lie. When you look at the people in the world and where they put their car at the end of the day and where fleets go, only a small percentage of them are in a spot where it&#8217;s easy to just plug in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As more EVs are built, hydrogen will be a simpler and cheaper way to fuel trucks and cars, according to Golden. The precious materials that go into batteries are only found in a few countries, while hydrogen is abundant, he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhat I think is happening in your world in terms of that energy transportation story is part of a longer arc of the decarbonization of fuels,\u201d Golden told hundreds of Solera customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human society used to rely on carbon-intensive materials such as wood and coal for fuel, he said. \u201cThen, we found these hydrogen-rich bonds in oil and gas,&#8221; he added. &#8220;What we&#8217;re entering is the era of hydrogen-rich, electrochemical energy conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Internal combustion engines have multiple stages of mechanical output that lose energy at each step, Golden explained. While hydrogen fuel cells convert the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity in one step. \u201cNot multiple steps\u2014one step,&#8221; he emphasized. &#8220;And it does it without moving parts. So it doesn\u2019t wear-and-tear. It doesn\u2019t break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the future of heavy-duty trucking energy is a fuel-based electric motor. \u201cThere will be EVs built for the next 10 to 15 years, maybe longer for short-haul. You look at what the Tier 1 system integrators are building,\u201d Golden explained. \u201cFrom 2023 to 2028, all of them are bringing hydrogen fuel cells online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kenworth has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/article\/21703368\/kenworth-toyota-team-on-hydrogen-fuel-cell-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">fuel-cell truck, which it developed with Toyota<\/a>, in pilot tests. The most recent major fuel-cell partnership is between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/emissions-efficiency\/article\/21241589\/cummins-freightliner-partner-on-hydrogen-fuelcell-truck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Cummins and Daimler Truck North America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He predicted market dynamics would turn green hydrogen\u2014energy produced through solar, wind, geothermal\u2014into a new energy commodity. \u201cChile and Australia are the world\u2019s largest lithium producers,\u201d Golden noted. \u201cWhen you look at their energy-use stories, the only thing you hear from Chile and Australia is their <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2022\/04\/22\/chile-green-hydrogen-clean-energy-industry-investment-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">green hydrogen strategy<\/a>. Because once you send that to them abroad, it doesn&#8217;t come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said hydrogen infrastructure projects could help fleets plan. \u201cIf the region you service or where your business is located has no kind of hydrogen corridor on the map, your future transition point is farther out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first regional hydrogen stations will either produce the fuel on-site or deliver it by truck.
