{"id":13717,"date":"2022-05-18T10:56:15","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T08:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=13717"},"modified":"2022-05-18T10:56:44","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T08:56:44","slug":"harassment-in-trucking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2022\/05\/18\/harassment-in-trucking\/","title":{"rendered":"Women speak up about harassment in trucking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Industry stakeholders call for action to raise awareness and advocate for the prevention of sexual assault and harassment in trucking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Driving long-haul for nearly 40 years, Virginia Clark has seen and experienced it all. And she believes this is the best time for women to join the trucking industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although Clark has always loved and been fascinated with the industry, trucking hasn\u2019t always been kind to her. She started her career as a nonunion driver in the 1980s with no formal CDL training. As one of very few female truck drivers at the start of her career, Clark experienced physical violence, mental abuse, and made just half the salary\u20148 cents a mile versus 16 cents a mile\u2014of her male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the industry has changed\u2014and continues to change\u2014for the better, Clark emphasized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen I was first hired, there weren\u2019t many women; we weren\u2019t widely accepted in the industry,\u201d Clark said during an April 28 joint virtual roundtable by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Transportation, where industry stakeholders gathered to raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment in trucking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, Clark drives for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/us\/en\/global.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">UPS<\/a> and is a <a href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/2022\/04\/women-truckers-challenge-industry-to-end-harassment-violence-on-the-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Teamsters Local 710 union member<\/a>. She\u2019s also a strong advocate for recruiting more professional female drivers into trucking\u2019s ranks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI tell everybody that they need to do it,\u201d she emphasized. \u201cThe money is great, the benefits are excellent, and as far as safety goes, it\u2019s a lot safer now than it was even 25 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The April 28 roundtable was part of the Biden administration\u2019s call for a National Day of Action to raise awareness and advocate for the prevention of sexual assault and sexual harassment in trucking. This event also aligns with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/operations\/drivers\/article\/21238068\/biden-admin-details-plan-to-boost-truck-driver-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">administration\u2019s Trucking Action Plan<\/a>, which aims to improve training and safety standards to recruit, train, and retain drivers from underrepresented communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/12\/16\/fact-sheet-the-biden-%E2%81%A0harris-administration-trucking-action-plan-to-strengthen-americas-trucking-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Trucking Action Plan<\/a> is a Women of Trucking Advisory Board, which has been established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to work with drivers and trucking organizations to help eliminate barriers that keep women from entering and staying in the trucking profession.<\/p>\n<div id=\"gam-5c5d-bb8d-f41-bee2\" class=\"ebm-ad__embed\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-google-query-id=\"CJOe4fzV6PcCFUaQUQodGe0EpA\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFor too long, widespread\u2014and often unchecked\u2014incidents of sexual assault, violence, and harassment in the trucking industry have damaged lives, destroyed careers, and steered women away from pursuing trucking jobs,\u201d said event moderator and Women\u2019s Bureau Director Wendy Chun-Hoon. \u201cThe Day of Action is an important step toward bringing industry stakeholders together to denounce sexual violence and harassment, effect meaningful change and, we hope, to inspire similar actions in other historically male-dominated occupations and industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fellow panelist Sharae Moore, founder of nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shetrucking.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">S.H.E. Trucking<\/a>, has been driving for eight years. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, when Moore was growing up, she always wanted to see \u201cwhat was on the other side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lookoutmtn.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Lookout Mountain<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTrucking provided me that opportunity, and I love the trucking industry,\u201d Moore said. \u201cMy dad is a truck driver; my mom was a bus driver. Once I got into trucking, it felt like freedom. That\u2019s what I loved the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Out on the road, however, Moore quickly recognized there was little to no representation for women in the industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She originally started S.H.E. Trucking as a clothing brand, designing T-shirts for lady truckers. Trucking Twitter<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-icon-wrapper\" data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon mdi:image-area ebm-icon\" data-v-76cf18d2=\"\" data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\">\n<div title=\"She Trucking Twitter Image\" data-v-b3ca50c8=\"\"><img title=\"She Trucking Twitter Image\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2022\/05\/SHE_Trucking_Twitter_Image.62726844333c9.png?auto=format,compress&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max\" alt=\"She Trucking Twitter Image\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis roundtable discussion is the first step, but we have more work to do,\u201d Moore urged. \u201cWe ask that the trucking companies listen and incorporate a zero-tolerance program and sexual harassment policies into their companies to increase the ratio of women in the trucking industry and to successfully onboard and retain more women drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How trucking companies can prevent harassment<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it comes to preventing harassment and discrimination in the workplace, training and outreach is the best place to start, noted Andrea Baran, regional attorney for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission<\/a>.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Baran pointed to three EEOC recommendations that are particularly well-suited to the trucking industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOne of the most important things any business can do is to make sure that employees hear from top company officials frequently that no form of harassment or discrimination will be tolerated,\u201d she said. \u201cA really highly effective way to do this is with a video statement from the company\u2019s CEO, president, or high-ranking official that clearly sends the message that this is important to the company. It\u2019s something that can be done repeatedly and be sent out as a link to workers that they can watch wherever they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Second, according to Baran, is implementing effective training that is available wherever workers are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, it\u2019s important that employers go beyond just prohibiting illegal behavior, she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBy the time you get to illegal behavior, you\u2019ve already sort of lost the war,\u201d Baran explained. \u201cIt\u2019s more important that employers encourage respect and civility in the workplace. Make it clear that any unwelcome or offensive behavior won\u2019t be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shelby Schacher, driver acquisition specialist and recruiter with <a href=\"https:\/\/giexpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Grand Island Express<\/a>\u00a0(GIE),\u00a0indicated that the carrier has implemented and abides by its zero-tolerance policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is important that new and current drivers understand our stance on sexual harassment and abuse; we speak about our stance on the matter Day One of orientation,\u201d Schacher said. \u201cAt that time, we outline the specific details of our anti-sexual harassment policy and educate them on how to alert the proper channels when an incident occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She also noted that it is GIE\u2019s obligation to provide resources if an incident does occur. A big piece of the company\u2019s operating model is its training program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe feel strongly that we would never want to make a trainer or student feel uncomfortable,\u201d Schacher said. \u201cOur goal is to ensure trainers and students are comfortable with the person they are paired with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/OPA\/newsreleases\/2022\/04\/OSEC2022684.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">this downloadable PDF<\/a> for GIE\u2019s zero-tolerance policy, as well as other policies from fleets, trucking associations, and various industry organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSexual harassment and sexual assault don\u2019t happen in a vacuum,\u201d explained Robin Runge, who serves as a board member of the D.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence. \u201cThey often happen in places where we see racial harassment, harassment based on national origin, and harassment based on disability. We recognize that individuals have several identities. Really having strong policies and procedures in place to address all of them collectively, not individually is really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Listen to the workers, Runge advised.
