Today\u2019s abundance of connected technologies aim to provide a holistic view of a vehicle\u2019s health to improve equipment uptime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navistar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navistar<\/a>, for example, offers its OnCommand Connection Advanced Remote Diagnostics solution, which provides fleets with real-time images and views of what\u2019s going on with their assets. The goal is to help carriers better plan out their downtime and address any maintenance issues in advance of a down condition, said Chet Ciesielski, VP of Navistar\u2019s on-highway truck business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another major piece of the uptime equation is ease of maintenance, he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur connected technology is the eyes to the vehicle for any fleet,\u201d Ciesielski said. \u201cWe see what\u2019s going on in the truck in real-time even before the driver sees it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dealers and fleets can monitor the health of a vehicle in real-time via the International 360, Navistar\u2019s fleet health monitoring system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis gives us the ability to give reports so they can [diagnose] on a weekly basis, a daily basis, whatever their cadence would want to be,\u201d Ciesielski said. \u201cIt allows them to see the vehicle so they can keep it on the road and plan for anything that\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bigger lever moving forward, Ciesielski pointed out, is predictive fleet maintenance, which can flag a unit and predict when the vehicle should be taken off the road before a catastrophic or downtime event occurs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/northamerica.daimlertruck.com\/homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daimler Truck North America<\/a> (DTNA) also has its own connectivity solutions, Detroit Connect, which give fleets and dealers access to real-time vehicle performance data. \u201cThis allows fleet managers to make decisions about when the trucks need to be serviced, how to resolve fault codes, and optimize performance with remote updates to make parameter changes as well as ECU firmware updates,\u201d said Mary Aufdemberg, general manager of product strategy and market development for DTNA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond vehicle insights, DTNA\u2019s truck connectivity technologies also power efficient fleet management operations via in-depth reporting on safety events or by facilitating a digital platform ecosystem, she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">DTNA recently partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformscience.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Platform Science<\/a> and its Virtual Vehicle platform so fleets could access telematics, software solutions, real-time vehicle data, and third-party applications directly from their vehicles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-578179fc=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit-text-wrapper\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"credit-text\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">Daimler Truck North America<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-icon-wrapper\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon mdi:image-area ebm-icon\" data-v-4d7a0022=\"\" data-v-578179fc=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"center\" data-v-05efa908=\"\" data-v-520b16e0=\"\">\n<div data-v-578179fc=\"\" data-v-05efa908=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">\n<div title=\"Since its model introduction in 2007, the Freightliner Cascadia&amp;rsquo;s fuel efficiency has improved nearly 35%, according to DTNA.\" data-v-578179fc=\"\"><img title=\"Since its model introduction in 2007, the Freightliner Cascadia&amp;rsquo;s fuel efficiency has improved nearly 35%, according to DTNA.\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetmaintenance.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fm\/image\/2022\/04\/16x9\/DTNA_Freightliner_Effieincy.620a7874473a8.624dda9d2e755.png?auto=format,compress&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max\" alt=\"Since its model introduction in 2007, the Freightliner Cascadia&amp;rsquo;s fuel efficiency has improved nearly 35%, according to DTNA.\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ebm-image-caption\" data-v-578179fc=\"\">Since its model introduction in 2007, the Freightliner Cascadia\u2019s fuel efficiency has improved nearly 35%, according to DTNA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt always goes back to some very key basics that you\u2019re seeing,\u201d said Scott Newhouse, chief engineer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peterbilt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peterbilt<\/a>. \u201cConnectivity helps provide efficiency and how you manage it. Being more connected gives you more guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Newhouse said fleets can recognize those benefits in Paccar\u2019s diagnostics solutions with over-the-air updates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All of Volvo\u2019s new trucks also come standard with remote diagnostics and remote software downloading. These solutions allow fleets to conduct necessary software updates or parameter setting changes remotely over the air instead of having to make an appointment at a dealership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur customers are focused on making sure they have service plans tailored to their truck and business needs,\u201d said Johan Agebrand, product marketing director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvotrucks.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volvo Trucks North America<\/a> (VTNA). The Volvo Blue Contract plan, for example, delivers insights into service schedules and costs upfront, giving fleets service plans tailored to specific vehicles and applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, remote diagnostics enable the Volvo Uptime Center to constantly monitor a truck&#8217;s health, identifying when critical parts will reach their end of life, Agebrand added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cRemote diagnostics help identify emerging issues before a breakdown occurs, which minimizes the occurrence of unplanned stops,\u201d he said. \u201cRemote programming enables over-the-air software updates in a matter of minutes to fix identified issues. This allows the truck to be constantly updated with the latest software, ensuring all components operate at their optimum efficiency, leading to better fuel efficiency, higher productivity, and uptime.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The future roadmap<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the transportation industry works its way toward a zero-emission future, OEMs and fleets are discussing exactly what those paths look like and when newer technologies will become a scalable reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Navistar, electric product offerings begin in the medium-duty and bus segments. Until battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cells are proven in the linehaul segment, Navistar is not expected to release a Class 8 electric truck, Mathias Carlbaum, Navistar president and CEO, said during a media roundtable discussion in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAbout the timeframe of 2027 to 2028, we do see the real tipping point for long-haul technology, batteries, infrastructure, charging, and all of this comes together,\u201d Carlbaum explained. \u201cWe will be gradually introducing it, but the real lever comes when the TCO case is so evident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Navistar\u2019s Ciesielski said that the OEM\u2019s future roadmap also includes autonomous truck technology over the next two decades. In the meantime, the on-highway plan, according to Ciesielski, is winning with aerodynamics and reducing parasitic losses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTrucking is the perfect environment to develop automated technologies, electrification technologies, and connected technology,\u201d Stephan Olsen, Paccar Innovation Center general manager, told <i>FleetOwner <\/i>during CES 2022. \u201cThere&#8217;s a business case where the tech pays the customer back over time.
