Last year\u2019s Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) weeklong inspection event saw nearly 5,200 vehicles across the United States, Canada, and Mexico removed from service for brake-related violations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo many of these out-of-service violations \u2013 situations that present actual hazards to roadway safety for the drivers and everyone around them \u2013 are preventable through proper maintenance practices and regular equipment examination,\u201d said Fred Andersky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worktruckonline.com\/tags?tag=Bendix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bendix<\/a> director \u2013 demos, sales, and service training. \u201cNow is the time for fleets and owner-operators to prepare, not just with the goal of passing inspections, but to help make sure vehicles are running at their safest, and that today\u2019s higher-level safety systems like full stability and collision mitigation are supported by optimally maintained brakes at the wheel-ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Brake Safety Week is part of CVSA\u2019s Operation Airbrake initiative \u2013 an outreach and enforcement campaign that aims to reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty brake systems on commercial motor vehicles. The event involves local, state, provincial, territorial, and federal motor carrier safety officials in the United States, Canada, and Mexico inspecting large trucks and buses, focusing on brake system violations.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What to Expect During Inspection<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worktruckonline.com\/10142523\/4-questions-about-brake-violations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brake Safety Week<\/a> roadside inspectors regularly conduct North American Standard Inspections, which cover a range of driver qualifications, documentation, and vehicle equipment conditions. Where brake systems in particular are concerned, they\u2019ll be checking for:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Loose or missing parts<\/li>\n<li>Air or hydraulic fluid leaks<\/li>\n<li>Trouble-indicator lights on the dash, including antilock brakes (ABS)<\/li>\n<li>Worn linings, pads, drums, or rotors<\/li>\n<li>Mismatched air chamber sizes across axles<\/li>\n<li>Warning device functionality (such as antilock braking system indicator lights)<\/li>\n<li>Proper brake adjustment<\/li>\n<li>Brake hoses and tubing condition (a special focus for this year)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When possible, inspectors will measure pushrod stroke to ensure brakes are properly adjusted. Drivers can incur fines if more than 25% of a vehicle\u2019s wheel-ends are out of adjustment, and too many out-of-adjustment brakes can lead to the vehicle being placed out of service.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-incontent01\" class=\"banner-im\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How to Get Ready and Prevent Violations<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What you do in the shop and during pre-trip <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worktruckonline.com\/10144035\/steps-non-cdl-drivers-should-follow-before-a-job\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walkarounds<\/a> \u2013 looking at every aspect of your vehicle \u2013 can make an important difference on the road and during a brake system inspection, simply by catching brake-related issues before they become problems.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every Day<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Check for damaged or loose-hanging air chambers, pushrods, or slack adjusters.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure slack adjusters on each axle are extended out to the same angle. Different angles can indicate an out-of-adjustment brake or a broken spring brake power spring.<\/li>\n<li>Examine tubing and hose condition, positioning, and connections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every Week<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Perform a 90- to 100-psi brake application with the wheels chocked and the parking brakes released, and listen for leaks.<\/li>\n<li>Check air disc brake rotors for cracks.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect drum brake linings for wear and cracks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every Month<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Check for moisture in the air system to prevent contamination that leads to component deterioration and system leaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAny time you\u2019ve got a vehicle in the shop, it\u2019s also worth greasing the S-cam brake tubes and automatic slack adjusters: This quick process helps prevent rust and corrosion, and helps keep the slack functioning properly,\u201d said Mark Holley, Bendix director of marketing and customer solutions \u2013 Wheel-End. \u201cAdditionally, Bendix recommends that before drivers get on the road, they routinely perform 90- to 100-psi brake applications \u2013 with the wheels chocked and the parking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worktruckonline.com\/10142639\/bendix-wingman-fusion-features-can-be-retrofitted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brakes<\/a> released \u2013 and listen for leaks that might be attributed to hoses and\/or tubing.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-img\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img class=\"wrapImageCMS aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fleetimages.bobitstudios.com\/upload\/work-truck-online\/content\/article\/2021-08\/20210819-breaks2-bendix-__-720x516-s.jpg\" alt=\"What you do in the shop and during pre-trip walkarounds \u2013 looking at every aspect of your vehicle \u2013 can make an important difference on the road and during a brake system inspection, simply by catching brake-related issues before they become problems. - Photo: Bendix\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption-description\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">What you do in the shop and during pre-trip walkarounds \u2013 looking at every aspect of your vehicle \u2013 can make an important difference on the road and during a brake system inspection, simply by catching brake-related issues before they become problems. <em>Photo: Bendix<\/em><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Drum and Disc Differences<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Air disc brakes and drum brakes have a few differing maintenance needs where Brake Safety Week is concerned, key among them the measurement of brake stroke. Because air disc brakes include an internal adjustment mechanism, their brake stroke is not measured externally, as is the case with drum brakes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMeasuring a drum brake\u2019s chamber stroke is a matter of checking the distance from the air chamber to the clevis pin with the brakes released, and then again after a fully charged brake application,\u201d Holley explained. \u201cThe difference between these is the brake stroke, and its maximum length depends upon the brake chamber type and size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Improperly adjusted brakes can also drag \u2013 impacting fuel efficiency and speeding up pad wear \u2013 or experience decreased stopping power.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parts Selection and Brake System Health<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it\u2019s time to replace a component in your brake system, whether it\u2019s at the wheel-end or in the air supply, be sure to select parts that won\u2019t degrade the performance level or bring it below the original equipment manufacturer\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is particularly true when it comes to brake friction, where the aftermarket is more crowded than ever, and the wrong choice can actually harm your system and your vehicle safety,\u201d Holley said. \u201cNot all replacement linings that are marketed as acceptable for federal stopping distance requirements will actually perform to the standard. Other complications arising from improper friction selection can include cracks, degradation of braking performance, or damage to other wheel-end components. Again, these are things a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worktruckonline.com\/10148865\/cvsa-2021-international-roadcheck-most-trucks-had-no-violations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roadside inspector<\/a> will note and penalize you for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To protect the air supply against corrosive oil aerosols that lead to leaks and potential violations, Bendix recommends using an oil-coalescing air dryer cartridge. It\u2019s important to note\u00a0while oil-coalescing cartridges can be used to replace standard cartridges, the reverse is not the case: You shouldn\u2019t downgrade from an oil-coalescing cartridge to a standard.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parts and the Whole<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTaken individually, these things inspectors are looking for \u2013 an active full-stability light on the dash, a kink in an air hose \u2013 may seem inconsequential,\u201d Andersky said. \u201cBut the complex interconnectivity of the entire brake system and more advanced safety technologies mean it\u2019s critical to take this holistic approach to upkeep.
