{"id":12298,"date":"2021-09-06T17:14:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=12298"},"modified":"2021-09-06T17:14:28","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:14:28","slug":"self-driving-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2021\/09\/06\/self-driving-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding sets stage for Gatik to transform the self-driving middle-mile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The AV startup is joining other autonomous trucking companies in Texas, but unlike most that focus on long-haul, Gatik is scaling up its fleet of self-driving medium-duty box trucks for urban areas.<\/p>\n<div data-v-06e359c6=\"\">\n<section class=\"ebm-content-body page-contents__content-body\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A lot of the recent buzz around autonomous trucking technology has focused on long-haul and heavy-duty tractors moving freight between distribution points hundreds of miles away. Autonomous startup <a href=\"https:\/\/gatik.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Gatik<\/a>, however, is focusing on medium-duty box trucks and the middle mile\u2014on and off highways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like other AV companies, Gatik is setting up a presence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/perspectives\/trucks-at-work\/blog\/21165424\/autonomous-truck-testing-heats-up-under-the-texas-sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">regulatory-friendly Texas<\/a> with a new autonomous trucking facility in Fort Worth. The Palo Alto, California-based transportation technology company announced a new autonomous hub in Texas along with news that it raised $85 million in Series B funding, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/kochdisruptivetechnologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Koch Disruptive Technologies<\/a> (KDT). That money will help Gatik scale its fleet of Classes 3-6 self-driving box trucks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSurprisingly, the industry has overlooked this middle-mile segment,\u201d Gautam Narang, Gatik\u2019s CEO and co-founder, told <i>FleetOwner<\/i>. \u201cFor us, that has been great because we get all the validation that we need from our customers. From Day One, Gatik has been focused on making sure that we\u2019re solving a real pain point and not building technology just for the sake of building technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gatik\u2019s fleet of 20 AV vehicles is currently driving for Walmart and other companies that focus on groceries. Narang hopes to have a much larger fleet by 2023. \u201cAs long as we can whitelist one route for unmanned operation and deploy at least three trucks along that route, that site becomes profitable for us,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s basically our strategy towards scaling disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Arkansas, Gatik-controlled trucks deliver products\u2014without a safety driver on board\u2014between a dark store and a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Bentonville. The AV company also partnered with Walmart to launch battery-electric AV box trucks in Louisiana. In Canada, Gatik self-driving vehicles are hauling cargo for Loblaws Inc., that nation\u2019s largest grocer. These partnerships came with the company\u2019s Series A funding, which was announced in November 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest round of funding and move into Texas puts Gatik in its fourth North American market and sets the company, founded in 2017, up for \u201cgrowth mode,\u201d Narang said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Narang said Gatik is also making deliveries for \u201cmultiple other Fortune 500 customers\u201d but declined to name those companies. \u201cThese are the customers that provide multitenancy for the Texas market,\u201d he said. \u201cMeaning our trucks are operating more than 20 hours daily. We move goods for Customer A during the day and another customer at night. The idea is to maximize the weekly utilization, allowing us to increase the margins even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Along with KDT, already existing investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationendeavors.com\/page-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Innovation Endeavors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wittingtonventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Wittington Ventures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fmcapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">FM Capital<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dynamo.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Dynamo Ventures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trucks.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Trucks VC<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intactfc.com\/English\/intact-ventures\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Intact Ventures<\/a> participated in the latest round of funding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chase Koch, president of KDT, noted the \u201cexplosive growth of ecommerce\u201d that is disrupting the logistics industry as companies and customers seek more efficient goods movement. \u201cNowhere is this more pronounced than on the middle mile,\u201d Koch said. \u201cGatik\u2019s transformational autonomous technology and world-class team are defining the standard in B2B short-haul logistics by addressing the most prominent issues facing today\u2019s supply chain. We believe Gatik will be the first to commercialize autonomous technology at scale for the North American medium-duty trucking market.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Middle-mile<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gatik plans to unveil more details of how it intends to scale up its offerings in the coming months as Gatik focuses on that \u201cB2B short-haul,\u201d middle-mile segment. \u201cOur use-case is such where we drive on routes that are anywhere from single-digit miles all the way up to 300 miles\u2014focusing on urban, semi-urban, and highway driving,\u201d he said. \u201cTypically, we focus on moving goods from a micro-distribution center to a micro-fulfillment center to multiple retail locations that are close to the customer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gatik\u2019s self-driving technology is on Class 3-6 box trucks that range from 11\u2019 to 26\u2019. While it has used some Ford Transit chassis cabs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/technology\/autonomous-vehicles\/press-release\/21160019\/gatik-isuzu-partner-on-md-autonomous-trucks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">Gatik and Isuzu North America recently struck a deal<\/a> to collaborate on mass-producing Level 4 autonomous medium-duty trucks earlier this year. Narang noted that Gatik\u2019s technology is \u201cOEM agnostic\u201d and could work on various equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike long-haul, heavy-duty AV companies focused on self-driving trucks moving freight along divided highways, where safety drivers control the tractor once it exits the highway, Gatik&#8217;s Level 4 AV technology can transition from highway to surface roads, Narang said. \u201cWe have designed our technology stack to handle all the complex urban scenarios,\u201d Narang said. \u201cEverything from traffic light navigation to intersection navigation to working around pedestrians, bicyclists. All of that is fair game for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To help its technology succeed, Narang said that Gatik pre-plans the routes for its box trucks \u201cwhere we feel we can deploy this technology safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Texas<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Narang noted that the high-density Texas Triangle\u2014the Dallas-Fort Worth in the north, San Antonio in the southwest, and Houston in the southeast\u2014is ripe for better goods movement. To support its expansion in the state, Gatik has partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancetexasmiz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone<\/a>. Gatik\u2019s move into the Lone Star State could create 500 new jobs by 2025, according to the company. Those jobs include operational, technical, and business roles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Narang said four things drew his company to Texas:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Gatik already has customers within this \u201cinternationally recognized logistics hub.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Texas has a \u201cvery progressive and favorable regulatory environment.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The state\u2019s climate offers \u201cfavorable weather conditions.\u201d While Gatik\u2019s AV technology can handle a light rain, it is still working on navigating through heavy rain and winter weather.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe most exciting one is we see Texas as a very scalable market, where we can establish a long-term presence in the state, and this is a market with opportunities of multitenancy\u201d are met.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hillwood\u2019s AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone offers mobility companies access to an ecosystem, resources, and partnerships to test, scale, and commercialize the latest technologies. AllianceTexas itself is a 27,000-acre facility in North Texas, anchored by the world\u2019s first dedicated industrial airport, Fort Worth Alliance Airport, and hosts one of the nation\u2019s biggest intermodal hubs. AllianceTexas is home to more than 525 companies that have built more than 50 million sq ft and created over 62,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cGatik is the perfect partner for
