{"id":12256,"date":"2021-08-29T16:50:35","date_gmt":"2021-08-29T14:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=12256"},"modified":"2021-08-29T16:50:35","modified_gmt":"2021-08-29T14:50:35","slug":"cost-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2021\/08\/29\/cost-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Actual Cost Data Helps Fleets Benchmark Repair Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>Photo: Jim Park<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>The Technology &amp; Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Associations has partnered with\u00a0Decisiv\u00a0to produce a new benchmarking tool designed to track part and labor costs.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Benchmarking allows an organization to measure\u00a0its\u00a0performance and compare it to that of other, similar businesses\u00a0\u2013 and to\u00a0discover areas where they can make improvements.\u00a0But getting good benchmarking data can be a challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Technology &amp; Maintenance Council\u00a0of the American Trucking Associations has partnered with\u00a0Decisiv\u00a0to produce a new benchmarking\u00a0tool designed to track part and labor costs. According to Mark Wasilko, vice president of marketing at\u00a0Decisiv, the report is based on the more than 13,000 daily service and repair events and more than 7 million commercial assets being managed in the company\u2019s Service Relationship Management platform. Data is collected from both U.S.\u00a0and Canadian fleets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The report will cover the nine\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/329925\/cracking-the-vmrs-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vehicle Maintenance Reporting Standards<\/a>\u00a0system-level events surrounding brakes, steering, tires, transmissions, charging, cranking, lighting,\u00a0exhaust,\u00a0and engines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWe are strong proponents for VMRS because\u00a0it\u00a0provides\u00a0the most accurate information,\u201d\u00a0Wasilko\u00a0explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0The\u00a0VMRS info\u00a0can help dealers and fleets see which repairs are happening most frequently so they can tailor technician training to the type of repairs being done.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cVMRS\u00a0also\u00a0gives the fleets\u00a0the ability\u00a0to accurately record all service events to get more accurate information on total cost of maintenance\u00a0and total cost of ownership,\u201d he\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">VMRS data allow fleets to spot common repair problems to see where they need to make improvements. It can even help them spot failure trends for a particular manufacturer\u2019s product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As for the benchmarking report,\u00a0it is based on actual\u00a0transaction\u00a0data from fleet service events. This is\u00a0more accurate than survey data that fleets may have used in the past to benchmark themselves,\u00a0Wasilko\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Decisiv\u00a0processes\u00a0275,000 service events a month, but a service event can contain multiple operations. Those 275,000 service events mean 600,000\u00a0or more\u00a0operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe currency of the reported information will provide a new level of accuracy in the analysis of the actual cost of maintenance and reports\u00a0that have never been available,\u201d Wasilko says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Fleets\u00a0can use\u00a0the report\u00a0to see trends\u00a0in different regions\u00a0across the country\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0in Canada.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">If a fleet is operating in multiple\u00a0regions,\u00a0it can use the data to schedule repairs in regions where repair costs are lower.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cFor example, if a fleet can save 4% to 5% on a repair,\u00a0that savings goes right to their bottom line,\u201d he\u00a0says. \u201cIf I am a fleet,\u00a04% to 5% back to my bottom line is significant.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wasilko\u00a0also thinks fleets will be able to use the information from the study to negotiate better parts pricing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIf [a fleet] is seeing a significant discrepancy between what they are paying for parts and what the benchmark average is,\u00a0it opens\u00a0the door for a conversation and negotiation on parts pricing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Initially the report will be available on a quarterly basis, but the frequency of the report could change depending on feedback from TMC members. Each report will have an overview\u00a0and also\u00a0will\u00a0have data on each system-level code broken down by parts cost, labor cost,\u00a0and total parts and labor costs. There also\u00a0will\u00a0be a trend analysis of what has occurred over the last five quarters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cBeing able to give fleets this information makes them better informed about what is actually happening in their own backyard as well as throughout the country,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cI believe the data from the report will make fleets smarter across the board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>This column first appeared in the June 2021 issue
