{"id":12160,"date":"2021-08-20T16:10:35","date_gmt":"2021-08-20T14:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/?p=12160"},"modified":"2021-08-20T16:11:06","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T14:11:06","slug":"fleets-53","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advancedfleetmanagementconsulting.com\/eng\/2021\/08\/20\/fleets-53\/","title":{"rendered":"How fleets can power efficiencies with deluge of data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Telematics data is always streaming back to fleet managers, but is it set up to improve efficiency and safety KPIs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It doesn\u2019t matter if a fleet is just starting out or has been operating for decades\u2014they all want the same thing: more. More safety, more efficiency, and more uptime. And to achieve these goals, a fleet owner needs at least some data. Luckily, this is the era of digital transformation, where connected trucks and telematics devices are the norm, generating more data than most fleets know what to do with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That\u2019s a good problem to have, as all the real-time data streaming from engines and sensors and cameras can be analyzed and distilled into a potent formula for success, according to the experts who participated in a recent CV Tech roundtable titled \u201cSafety through telematics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The session was fully loaded with advice on how any fleet can leverage data into actionable insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cYou have to look at the practical issues of having all that data,\u201d Mike Degeneffe, vice president of driver experience and telematics at Schneider National, said. \u201cMore is better in terms of our perspective, but you have to be able to consume the data. If it\u2019s just noise\u2014if you can&#8217;t transform that into impactful information\u2014then it doesn&#8217;t have value.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"iav-target\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Schneider\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/research\/fleetowner-500\/document\/21154698\/2021-fleetowner-500-top-forhire-fleets\">was ranked ninth\u00a0on the\u00a0<i>FleetOwner\u00a0<\/i>For-Hire 500<\/a>, with about 12,000 tractors and 34,000 trailers. The fleet has been on the bleeding edge of driver\/ops communication since at least 1988 when it began using Qualcomm two-way satellite devices and co-developed its current tablet-based telematics solution with Platform Science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWe really want to have a productive driver and help them to deliver on our freight, and so all the tasks that they have to do, from pickup and delivery steps between all that is managed through a dynamic workflow capability, is communicated to drivers,\u201d Degeneffe said. \u201cNone of that would be of any value if we didn&#8217;t have it integrated for back-end systems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The open architecture allows Schneider to customize and sort for relevant data, such as engine and safety system data, to improve real-time communication with drivers and coach them if alerted to unsafe behavior, such as hard braking events. Pre-trip, it allows the fleet to have an omniscient view of its asset utilization, including trucks, trailers and containers, and if they are full or empty. Schneider also shares road data with its navigation provider to detect problem areas such as improper roll stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Being able to find the right provider and solution was far easier for Schneider than most fleets, considering its size and experience. Degeneffe noted Schneider asset data goes right through its own system, but smaller fleets will likely have to work with their provider\u2019s fixed platform that provides analysis in the cloud, selecting which system offers the most safety and efficiency benefits for their operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cOne size fits nobody, so when you look in the marketplace for solutions, you usually have a list of features that you want to compare each solution against, and then oftentimes you have to compromise,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Small but efficient<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For fleets on the smaller side, a concerted effort into managing relevant telematics data can result in relatively large gains. Such is the case with Hellbent Xpress. In 2010, <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetowner.com\/equipment\/trucks-trailers\/article\/21154639\/older-trucks-gain-new-ground\">owner Jamie Hagen<\/a> was a one-man show, though his self-professed obsession with efficiency allowed his fleet to grow to six Mack Anthems, which will rise to nine when the latest order is fulfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hagen, who has been driving commercially for nearly 30 years and knew how crucial it was to control fuel and maintenance costs, spec\u2019d a Mack truck with the Super Econodyne downspeeding package. <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/nacfe.org\/technology\/downspeeding\/\">Downspeeding<\/a> promotes fuel efficiency by configuring the transmission to speed up the rear gear ratio to lower the engine speed and reduce friction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThat&#8217;s what set me on the path here to excellent fuel economy that slowly worked its way into extreme profitability and made me think that maybe I could do it again with a second truck,\u201d Hagen recounted during the discussion. \u201cI bought a second truck in 2017, which led to a third truck in 2018\u2014 just slowly taking the profits from one to help build another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"img-align-left\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-v-764cf39b=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-content-teaser-image\" align=\"left\" data-v-7237e60a=\"\" data-v-764cf39b=\"\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\" data-v-26efb590=\"\" data-v-7237e60a=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-26efb590=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit ebm-image-credit--top\" data-v-26efb590=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon ebm-icon creditImage\" data-v-1982aa12=\"\" data-v-26efb590=\"\">\n<div class=\"tooltip-wrapper ebm-tooltip\" data-v-7a20e599=\"\" data-v-1982aa12=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-tooltip__trigger\" data-v-7a20e599=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit-text-wrapper\" data-v-26efb590=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\" data-v-26efb590=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Credit: Jamie Hagen via LinkeDrive<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-26efb590=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-26efb590=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Jamie Hagen, fleet owner of Hellbent Xpress , uses PedalCoach and MyDrive from LinkeDrive to measure performance and understand data more richly.\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2021\/07\/Jamie_2.60f0289172be9.png?auto=format&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2021\/07\/Jamie_2.60f0289172be9.png?auto=format&amp;w=1300&amp;h=730&amp;fit=max&amp;dpr=2 2x\" alt=\"Jamie Hagen, fleet owner of Hellbent Xpress , uses PedalCoach and MyDrive from LinkeDrive to measure performance and understand data more richly.\" data-v-26efb590=\"\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ebm-image-caption\" data-v-26efb590=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><br \/>\nJamie Hagen, fleet owner of Hellbent Xpress , uses PedalCoach and MyDrive from LinkeDrive to measure performance and understand data more richly.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With more trucks on the road, he was able to invest in a telematics solution called PedalCoach by <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedrive.com\/\">LinkeDrive<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIt basically monitors your fuel and where you&#8217;re traveling, just a bunch of information to really help you narrow down how you drive but also the other mitigating factors in your driving,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cThe more we dug into it, the better it got.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Screenshots from LinkeDrive\u2019s MyDrive portal that Hagen displayed showed he was able to achieve an overall mpg of 11 and adjusted mpg of 11.7. The portal also breaks down average speed into overall and highway, and does the same with mileage. This is a crucial insight into fuel projections, as it shows even if a driver sets the adaptive cruise control to 70 mph, the overall average is 55 due to starts and stops and traffic. Data on elevation, daylight and temperature, which affects fuel efficiency, are also included for optimal fuel usage visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hellbent also employs the FuelGauges app by Let\u2019s Truck for historical fuel data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThere are only so many things within your control, but there are things you can improve upon,\u201d Hagen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hagen also started improving driver morale by gamifying the data to incentivizing his team\u2019s efficient driving with better pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI couldn&#8217;t be in the cab with them, but with this thing in the truck, I could tell what was going on,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Digital eye on safety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Incremental improvements in fuel usage pale in comparison to how much can be saved by exploiting a truck\u2019s safety system data. That\u2019s because you can\u2019t put a price on a lost life, though juries levying nuclear verdicts, punitive damages that can exceed $10 million (or much more) because of a truck crash, sure do try.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Avoiding such tragic events is a major reason why <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.here.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE Technologies<\/a>, which sponsored the CV Tech session, developed its location and route planning solution for commercial vehicles. Some of the data points include restrictions for bridge and tunnel heights, hazardous goods, and axle and weight limits. It also includes locations on rest stops and available parking, which a dispatcher can use to direct a fatigued driver or one nearing their hours of service limits to find a safe haven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWe&#8217;re looking fundamentally at post-trip analysis, at being able to observe driver behavior over time and provide richer data that helps fleet managers make informed decisions about the overall safety of their fleet operations,\u201d said Alex Osaki, marketing manager at HERE.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He said analysis of past accidents and where they occurred can prevent future ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s impossible to really understand the cause of accidents and to assess your driver performance without being able to provide the context, without understanding all of the things that go into any particular route,\u201d Osaki said. \u201cBeing able to provide answers to these by making the map computational, by bringing together location intelligence into one place, that allows these questions to be answered can provide a dramatic impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Those context clues include the time of day, weather conditions, road surface, and road curvature. Osaki said applying that location data and safety technology can reduce fatalities up to 70%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Osaki also added those insights provide more visibility into a driver\u2019s day-to-day operations and potential risky behavior, such as exceeding the speed limit.
