Along with better fuel efficiency, the fleet has become safer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe driver coach app really works well with for the driver because as they&#8217;re driving down the road, they see immediate feedback, whether it&#8217;s based on their acceleration or their coasting or whatever it may be in their driving performance,\u201d Cody McClain, director of safety and human resources for Tucker Freight Lines (TFL), said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckload.org\/live-learning-webinars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truckload Carriers Association webinar <\/a>on real-time coaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The webinar was sponsored by trucking technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/isaacinstruments.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaac Instruments<\/a>, which offers real-time driver coaching integrated with its ELDs, and led by Jean-Sebastien Bouchard, Isaac\u2019s co-founder and EVP of sales. \u201cIn the early days with Isaac,\u201d he said, \u201cI helped the team design real-time driver coaching algorithms that have grown today into the Isaac Coach, the real-time coaching service that\u2019s available in-cab on our platform for drivers to generate fuel savings and be safer on our roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">McClain said that since his fleet\u2014a mix of company drivers and owner-operators\u2014started using the Isaac Coach, they\u2019ve learned to appreciate how it makes them safer and more efficient drivers. \u201cSometimes company drivers don\u2019t see why they should get better fuel economy,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted to incentivize them and show them that if you are getting better mileage, we want to put that back in their pockets and into random fuel islands across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"none\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">\n<figure class=\"ebm-image-wrapper\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit ebm-image-credit--top\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-icon ebm-icon creditImage\" data-v-d63c4552=\"\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">\n<div class=\"tooltip-wrapper ebm-tooltip\" data-v-7a20e599=\"\" data-v-d63c4552=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-tooltip__trigger\" data-v-7a20e599=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit-text-wrapper\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">\n<div class=\"ebm-image-credit-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\">Credit: Isaac Instruments<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ebm-image\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Isaac Coach Tablette Eng M\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2021\/07\/Isaac_Coach_Tablette_ENG_m.60f18a2c5b34d.png?auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;w=1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.fleetowner.com\/files\/base\/ebm\/fleetowner\/image\/2021\/07\/Isaac_Coach_Tablette_ENG_m.60f18a2c5b34d.png?auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;w=1440&amp;dpr=2 2x\" alt=\"Isaac Coach Tablette Eng M\" data-v-7dd6bfcb=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using the Isaac Coach scoring system for fuel efficiency, TFL has incentivized its company drivers to be more efficient. \u201cThey\u2019ve made great strides and see the benefits,\u201d McClain said of the drivers. \u201cOnce they get their scores to certain places, they see money back in their own pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deryk Gillispie, vice president of IT and innovation for <a href=\"https:\/\/trimacjobs.com\/\">Trimac<\/a>, one of the largest tanker carriers in North America, said his company is also using the Isaac system to incentivize company drivers. \u201cWe get a weekly summary of all the operators\u2019 results,\u201d he said during the webinar. \u201cEverybody above a certain threshold is entered into a drawing. Through our company recognition program and platform and some financial incentives, those folks receive a meaningful financial bonus for their performance that week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the independent drivers at Trimac, they see incentives on their own as they spend less money on fuel since installing real-time coaching in their cabs, Gillispie said. \u201cIn some areas, our independent contractors consistently achieved much higher scores than our company drivers do,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd we believe this is attributed to the fact that several of those independent contractors really see and have observed and are experiencing the savings on fuel consumption. So they\u2019re on board with the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_y5cET_xX-E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><center><\/center><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Isaac Coach platform, which is installed under the dash, monitors and records more than 40 vehicle inputs,\u201d Bouchard said. \u201cWe measure them over 100 times per second and we collect information to transfer it into something a driver is going to understand meaningfully,\u201d he explained. \u201cSpecifically, it looks at progressive accelerations, anticipations, and hard maneuvers that will generate the fuel efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The system also monitors shifting and cruise control, along with driver safety behaviors and critical safety events through its video camera system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All of these actions\u2014and inactions\u2014are computed into the Isaac Coach Score, which coupled with real-time in-cab coaching leads to driver improvements in efficiency and safety, Bouchard said. \u201cWhat\u2019s really unique with the Isaac Coach is we\u2019ve built an algorithm that won\u2019t penalize the drivers for elements outside their control, meaning the aerodynamics, the wind, the load, the slope, the engine type,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe all know the driver doesn\u2019t control that. The driver controls the pedals, the steering, the gear he\u2019s in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The system uses visual indicators on the in-cab display to coach the driver through maneuvers that the technology company said could save fleets as much as 15% in fuel costs. The system also allows fleets to create internal custom scoring systems used in conjunction with the Isaac Coach score.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the correlations between the increase in efficiency and the safe driving habits,\u201d McClain said. \u201cThe correlation is spot on. If someone\u2019s being efficient and taking care of their equipment, they\u2019re driving safely as well. To quantify it can be a little hard\u2014but we\u2019ve seen a reduction in DOT recordable accidents per million miles. We\u2019ve seen a reduction in claims.
